Her identity as Margaret Simmons was important and if she started to make cracks in that facade this early in the journey she would be discovered and she didn’t want that to happen so instead of fighting she had to come up with an alternative idea. The alternative she came up with left a foul taste in her mouth.
“Help! Someone help me!” She screamed for help the man’s head jerk around to see if anyone was coming and she took the chance to run from the man, darting and dodging between the wagons. It left a distaste in her mouth to play the damsel in distress when it would be so easy to put a blade in the man.
“Get back here you bitch!” The man was racing after her but he had taken the wrong turn, she dropped behind some barrels. “I will find you!”
She pulled out a dagger in case he did manage to find her, eventually, the people would come back from the party or the guards would investigate, as a matter of fact, she wondered why they weren’t investigating. Margaret was far enough away from the music that the guards at the edge of the wagon train should be coming to help her. She darted between hiding spots following the man who had been after her.
“I can’t cover for you much longer, people are going to come back from the party and hear you screaming you idiot!” a guard snapped at the brute. “Your money won’t be worth anything if the people hang me.”
“Yeah, well we will both hang if she isn’t found because I am not going to go down alone so help me search.” the brute was scanning the darkness, never suspecting how close she really was.
It looked like things were getting more serious, could this be the problem the King was talking about. If the guards of caravans were helping to make people disappear that would be a big problem for trade. She might need to investigate further and not just take care of the brute but she really wanted to be done with him tonight but not knowing who they were and how much they were actually up to might destroy her mission if they were just cogs in a larger machine.
