Josh’s mind went straight to Kate. He’d been friends with her for over 10 years now, but in recent years as the two of them had matured both physically and mentally, his feelings for her had grown beyond mere friendship into something stronger. However, when he’d tried to broach the subject with her, she’d quickly change the topic of conversation. It had become fairly clear to Josh that she wasn’t interested in a romantic relationship with him.
Now, with this magical dictaphone, it seemed that he’d be able to change that.

He thought about waiting for school tomorrow so he could surreptitiously try to grill Kate to get an idea of exactly what she was interested in, but he wanted to use the dictaphone now. With the hope that the magic of the dictaphone would work as he intended, he cleared his throat and pressed the “record” button.
“I’m still my current age,” he said, “but I look like Kate O’Neill’s ideal romantic partner.”
He pressed the “stop” button and heard the sound he’d heard when he changed his walls, like a lit Fourth of July sparkler but higher-pitched.
He looked down and could see he was changing, and it didn’t take long to realize he was changing into...
