Despite her best efforts, Sari couldn't get in the right frame of mind to grow to match Lydia's enormous size. She was simply too cold to be able to summon that type of rage at the drop of a hat. Continued flight was her only option. Unfortunately, as the thunderous footsteps of her pursuer grew ever-closer, Sari also realized that if left to flight alone, she was practically doomed. Lydia could cross entire fields in a single gigantic step, and Sari had no hope of outrunning her in a fair race.
She had to think strategically, or she'd be little more than a smear under her master's foot.
Her first impulse was to make a break for Widowwood. Not only could she more easily hide in its mass of people, but the sight of that hated kingdom might take Lydia's attention off of her traitorous apprentice. If the giant mage got distracted in leveling her old enemies, Sari might be able to slip away to safety in the confusion and chaos.
But wait, Sari realized. She was thinking like a mortal, when her new powers made her so much more. Why bother fleeing through forests, when she could flee through realities? It would be so simple to open a portal to another world, and escape into it. True, Lydia might be able to sense such a use of magic, but Sari would have enough of a head-start to ensure her survival and plot her revenge.
Another of Lydia's footsteps caused an earthquake so profound that Sari stumbled, practically falling to her knees. She didn't have time to debate these options any longer.
