Chapter #2

Head to the Mall, Get Used to the New Order

    by: Unknown
You stumble out of bed, still dreary, but falling back to sleep at this point seems unlikely. You decide to try and remain as calm as possible; you shower, brush your teeth, and get dressed. You're listening to some Metallica along with your morning routine which takes your mind off of everything for a while. You slip on your socks and finally take a step out of your room. You have to wonder if your mother and sisters are also affected with this new power, you can't imagine why they wouldn't be.

"Mom? Catherine? Jenna?" You call to them, your voice echoing through the house as you begin to walk down the hall. "You guys here?" You continue to yell as you open your little sister's door to her room. Clothes and toys strewn across the floor. You close that door and go to Jenna's room, open the door and it's certainly much cleaner than your younger sister's room, however it too is empty. "Where in the world did everyone go?"

You walk down the stairs and expect to find your mom making a huge breakfast like she does every Saturday, but she too is gone. You go to the fridge and grab the half empty gallon of orange juice. Glancing around and making sure no one is around you skip getting a glass and begin to drink straight from the carton.

"Heh, if mom was here she'd kill me," you mutter to yourself as you make your way over to the couch and sit down.

You flip on the TV and all that's on is news of a bunch of hungry women roaming around. Instantly, you tense up. You were enjoying your morning so much you completely forgot about this scary new world you're in.

"Man, I don't believe this!" You yell, actually angry at the situation. You let out a long sigh and just fall back, your head landing on the soft couch pillow.

You lay there for a few moments, flipping through channels, trying to find some non-cannibalistic programming. Then your phone rings, you reach into your pocket and fumble a bit before pulling your iPhone out. You take a look at it and see it's your friend Megan calling, you slide your finger across the phone and hold it up to your ear.

"Hello," you say in your usual awkward tone.

"Hey John!" Megan shouted back into the phone, she's always been real chipper and upbeat. Often times over-hyper even, but that's why you like her. "What are you doing?"

"Oh... uhmmm, not much," you answer her nervously. "What about you?"

"Not much?" She says, mocking you jokingly. "Well good, if you're not doing anything then you can come hang out with me and Brian. We're at the mall right now, get your butt down here!"

"Heh heh," you chuckle at her enthusiasm. "All right, I'm on my way, I'll be there in about ten, sound good?"

"Perfect! I didn't get to say goodbye to you last night at the party."

"Oh right, the party," you say slowly as something clicks in your brain. "Hey Megan, so... have you heard about the... changes?" You wait for a few seconds and don't hear a response. "Megan...?"

"OH!!!!" She yells into the phone, scaring you half to death. "You're asking if I'm gonna eat you up!" Her nonchalant way of saying this give you unease. "Jeez John, come on now you know me better than that. We've been friends for years! If I wanted to eat you I'd come do it at your house. You'll be safe, I actually haven't even tried eating someone yet."

"Well," you say as you loosen up a bit. "That's relieving to hear. All right then, I'm on my way. See you guys at the food court?"

"Sounds good Johnny-Boy!" She says as she hangs up the phone without saying goodbye.

"Welp, here we go. I'll have to get used to getting around outside this house eventually, may as well start early. What's the worst that could happen, heh heh. Ugh." Your chuckle is replaced by a deflated grunt.

You grab your lightweight jacket and toss it on. You chug the rest of the orange juice, toss the carton away, grab your car keys and head out the door. You lock up behind you and walk over to your car. It's odd, everything still seems so normal, just like a cool fall day. You get into your car and pull out of the driveway and away you go.

You have the following choices:

1. Your Drive to the Mall Goes Smooth as Silk

2. You Notice Red and Blue Lights Flashing Behind You
