Melanie's phone vibrated with a call almost on cue. She'd just gotten home from a jog after work and was sitting on the couch to take a breather from it when Eric had called her. While Melanie didn't really know much about Eric beyond being the mail room clerk, he did stand out in her eyes as one of the few people working under her who actually seemed to genuinely look up to her. She acknowledged the respect he gave as worthy of consideration, though while this didn't make him stand out as being much more than someone who knew his place, she didn't hesitate to answer the call. Could be something important.
"Hello?" Melanie asked.
"Uh, hi, Melanie, it's me Eric," Eric introduced. It had been a little while since he'd sorted through the mail for the day but he'd just remembered the ad and decided to jump the gun. "I, uh, I got this ad in the mail and I kinda wanted to share it with you."
"Eric," Melanie asked, "please let this be worth my time."
"I'm hoping it is, too," Eric responded. "I know you might think it's ridiculous, hell, even I think it's kinda ridiculous, but apparently there's some company a doctor made that's supposedly able to switch your body with another person," Eric said. Melanie's eyebrow raised at this. "I was... kinda curious as to if you wanted to see what this is about with me? It is the weekend tomorrow," Eric continued.
"And why would I be interested in this?" Melanie asked. Her tone was dismissive, but right after saying that she started to actually think of answers. While Melanie was proud of the direction she took her life, she had to admit whether she wanted to or not... she felt something was missing in her life. She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but focusing so much on achieving her high goals had left her feeling a little bit... detached. She was definitely above the people who worked below her, yet wasn't quite on top of the corporate ladder, all the while becoming more and more isolated from her old friends. She would never dare to abandon her efforts... but letting someone else handle them for a bit might be nice, she started to think.
"Well, it just... it seems interesting?" Eric awkwardly got out. There was an awkward pause for a moment. "Melanie?"
"I'll do it." Neither of the two could believe what Melanie had just said.
"Okay, um, we are going there tomorrow, right?" Eric asked, getting excited at what seemed like a miracle.
"Yes." Melanie answered flatly. As Eric told her the time and address which she wrote down, she thought about what she was doing. This was a ridiculous concept. This had to just be a tourist attraction or something silly. Swapping bodies with people just didn't exist. But people asking to go and do something with only them and her... That rarely happened, even with her friends, let alone underlings at work who she didn't give much thought to. It's not like she would think of going somewhere like that by herself. "I've written it down," she told him.
"Alright, I'll see you there! Bye!" Eric enthusiastically chirped down the phone.
"Bye," Melanie responded, and the two hung up, neither of the two able to believe what they just agreed to.
If this was real, Eric was finally about to live his fantasy of being Melanie! After so many years of admiring that woman, strong both physically and mentally, and fantasizing about having accomplished as much as she had... he had a chance of actually living it. The body. The role. The life. Not forever, maybe not even for very long, but man, it would be amazing.
Melanie, meanwhile, was having an easier time believing that body swapping was real - which she didn't even consider the notion of enough to laugh at - than that one of her underlings actually wanted to try and do something casual with just her. Not business-related, just... meeting somewhere to do something together. It had been a while since anyone had done that, let alone someone from work. She couldn't even understand why she was so amazed by this. She hadn't had much time for friendly interactions in recent years... Did she really need them?
"Whatever," Melanie decided, trying to shrug these feelings off for now. "Shouldn't be any harm in just seeing what this nonsense is about." She tapped a reminder into her phone and continued her day. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
