A "prototype training module" is what the council called it. A new way of making Spectres better, more efficient, more tactical in combat. Nothing unusual or even suspicious, the Council was, after all, always looking for better recuits to join the Spectres, why not simply improve the ones they had?
Needless to say, the story was a cover. The project was, in reality, an experiment backed by mostly Salarian and Asari interests to improve the physicality and even mental capacity of certain operatives. And for the most part, was successful in doing so.
By utilising both the Salarian's gene-editing experience and Asari biotics, soldiers who entered the facility always left...better. Smarter, faster, stronger, with better reflexes, every individual got something a little different, the "treatment" merely heightened the existing strengths within an individual. Operatives who were snipers before never missed. Those who were undercover agents became more capable in stealth and sabotage. Even grunts grew stronger, faster, better tacticians. In a word, this project created super-soldiers.
It was this project that Lieutenant Commander Ashley Williams found herself in. The brunette recieved her orders from the council almost immediately after becoming a Spectre. She tried to argue for her place on Shepard's crew again, but they brushed it aside, simply stating, "Two Spectres on one ship reduces the effectiveness of each. Besides, after your injuries on Mars we want to ensure that you are effective." So she shut her mouth and listened to the remainder of the briefing.
"I can't believe the council doesn't trust me, Shepard. They give me Spectre status and they still want to 'ensure I'm effective'. You'd think they figure it out eventually, Humans aren't the worst things in this galaxy," Ashley fumed through the intercom to her romantic partner, John Shepard. "Believe me Ash, I know," Shepard replied, trying to think of what to say to calm her down. "But as much as the council has seemed to be against us, they have a point. You need to be at 100%, especially for the Reapers. Besides, some extra training never hurt, did it?" He said, hoping it would suffice. Ashley sighed, "Yea, yea, the Reapers, I know. I don't know how you stay motivated all the time, skipper, but when I'm finished with this training, have a seat on the Normandy ready for me. I dont care if I have to leave the Spectres, I'm not letting you win this war alone."
They finished their conversation, and Ashley prepared for the journey to the training facility.
But what she got there was much more than just training. The council had selected her because of her strength. She had been through much with Shepard, and those experiences alone had to have taken a toll on her body and mind. But she resisted, and more importantly, persisted. She pushed through. The council needed that, they needed hard-hitting, hard to kill Spectres that they could rely on, as the Krogan have always been troublesome.
What was their goal for Ash?
