Madison decided to sign up to be a tutor. She had always been rather smart, and was blessed with the ability to transfer knowledge well to others. Others had told her that she would have made a good teacher, but she thought that she may be a bit short tempered for that kind of work. She got an email back a few days later from student job placement that told her she needed to take a quick exam in a few days to certify that she had a high level understanding of courses that she could teach.
A few days later Madison took the test and found out that she could tutor people in a wide variety of subjects, so she was good to go. Madison wasn't that shocked, since she had gone to a private school back in Coral Gabels, which was pretty rigorous. After the test results came back, Madison met with the head of the Powers University city wide tutoring program, a friendly looking woman in her 50s, Ms. Green.
''So who pays for my salary if I get hired by a school.''
''It's split by the university and the school that you instruct, on a sliding scale. Richer schools will pay for more of the percentage, and transportation costs than poorer schools, where the university chips in more. We get a lot of our funding for this program from grant money, it's a really great program. It gives our students, like yourself, some good job experience for their resume, and it helps kids get a little extra boost at a lower cost to the schools.''
''Wow, that's really cool, well I'm excited to hear about what I can do.''
''Great, we matched up the hours that you were available and your subjects you scored highly in with schools that needed assistance on this printout.''
Madison read over the two options, one was for Kelly High School, which was located in the inner city. From what Madison had read about the area before she came to Powers, the school wasn't the best academically, and struggled for a while. An advantage of going there was that it was somewhat close to campus, and she would be helping kids who needed it the most.
The second option was Joyce High School, located in a suburb. Madison looked over the profile and it had great average score for the students, and a very high average household income. She figured she could probably relate better to these students, as she also grew up in a rich area. The only downside was that she would have to take the train out to the school, but Ms. Green had already said that was paid for, and she could just do homework during the 15 minute ride it took out there on the express route.
''Hmm, well this both look very interesting.''
Ms. Green had been looking at Madison while she was reading the options and noticed that Madison looked rather fit.
''Hey Madison, please don't take this in an inappropriate manner, but did you work out a lot in high school?''
''Yeah, my family belongs to a gym in Florida.''
''Ah, well you scored very, very high on your physical education portion of the test, so there is a fitness trainer position also available, right here on campus. It is for teens who are trying to lose weight, and you could be one of the counselors who teaches them new exercises, and healthy dietary habits.''
''I don't know if I'm really qualified for that kind of thing.''
''You certainly are, and it's a free program, so they won't expect you to know a ton.''
''Ah, well...''
''You would still get paid by the University.''
Both her and Ms. Green laughed when Ms. Green cleared that up for Madison.
