Alicia had been on her way to visit her younger brother David at school when something peculiar happened. As she was about to cross the street a few blocks down from the college David attended, she noticed an old woman carrying a bag of groceries who was also crossing the street and, being the considerate and responsible person that she was, she offered to help her cross. Upon seeing the old woman to the other side of the street, the woman turned to her and said that she had granted her the ability to swap anything between two people just by thinking about it. At first, Alicia thought that she had misheard the woman, but, before she got the chance to ask her to repeat what she said, she had seemingly disappeared. She had looked away for a brief second, and the woman was gone. Confused, and beginning to think she had imagined the whole thing, Alicia continued on her way to David's college.
As she drew nearer, Alicia pulled out her phone and called her brother up just to let him know she was getting close. A few moments later, David picked up and said, "Hi, sis." To her it sounded like he wasn't sure why she was calling.
"Hi, David," Alicia replied in her usual warm tone. "I hope you remembered that I'm coming over for a visit today."
"Don't worry. I didn't forget."
Alicia could tell that wasn't true, but didn't mind. She knew her brother could be forgetful sometimes. "Alright, well, I just wanted to let you know that I'm almost at your building now."
"Okay. I'll be right down."
"Alright then. See you in a bit." With that, Alicia hung up and continued on her way.
About 10 minutes later, David led Alicia up to his dorm room, having signed her into the building.
"So, how have you been?" Alicia asked as they stepped through the door.
"Pretty good, I guess," David replied. "Not much going on. How about you?"
"I've been well," Alicia answered. She briefly thought of the old woman she encountered on the way there from the subway stop, and wondered if she should tell her brother about it. She also wondered if she really did have the power the old woman had said she had given her. It seemed silly, but there was no point in not trying.
"Would you like a drink or anything?" David asked, opening up the fridge.
"No thanks," Alicia replied, taking a seat on the couch in the common area.
David walked over and joined his sister, a can of Coke in hand. He then sat down in the chair opposite the couch, then popped the can open and took a drink.
As the two started making small talk, Alicia again thought of the old woman and thought about whether or not to mention her to David. Knowing her brother, Alicia knew he would ask her to try it out. She figured that if it didn't work they could have a good laugh about it, but she also thought that it might be a good idea to test it out before telling him about it, just in case it did work. Of course there was still the possibility of the whole thing being crazy and not worth mentioning at all.
