"Holy shit, I can't believe it," David said, his eyes wide as he watched the couple he'd just swapped pass him by, sporting each other's hair atop their heads. It was like something out of some sci-fi fetish story on the Internet. David had surfed many dark corners of the online world and knew people were into so weird shit, far more perverse even than some of his own fantasies. A lot of it was impossible, of course, but this ... this was real. There was no way, yet the evidence was clear as day in front of him.
A few moments ago, David had been on his way to the nearest bus stop on campus to start his trip back home to visit his family for the weekend when he saw an old woman spill her groceries in the middle of a crosswalk. Being the responsible guy he was, David helped her to gather her fallen groceries and finish crossing the street. That was all well and good, but it was what happened next that had changed everything.
For some strange reason, the woman said she had given him the power to swap anything with anyone just by thinking about it as a reward for helping her. David had at first thought she was just a crazy old woman, but something didn't seem right about the whole encounter. He had looked away for a brief moment, and the woman had seemingly vanished in that time. There was absolutely no way she could have run off that fast ... and no one would just make something like this up, right?
As he arrived at the bus stop and took a seat to wait for the next bus, David resolved to see if he really did have this swapping power like the woman said. It seemed far-fetched, but what was the worst that could happen? He tried to use it and it didn't work? And so he had imagined swapping the hair of a passing couple in their late 20s, thinking he'd be laughing at himself for even entertaining the idea that it was possible.
He was quickly proven wrong.
David's eyes continued to linger on the couple as they walked by. He couldn't believe what he was seeing, but he did manage to snap him out of his stunned state. His mind raced as he thought of the possibilities now open to him. There was so much he could do! The logical side of his brain told him to calm down though. He needed to test just how his new power worked.
Before the couple were out of sight, David focused on the idea of returning them to normal, and their hair swapped back. "Okay, that's good. I can reverse changes too," he said to himself, as he evaluated the limits of his powers. He needed to know exactly what they could and couldn't do, and there was only one way to find that out.
