It had taken many months, but you've finally managed to finish development of your latest and greatest invention! It was a revolutionary device capable of influencing the size of matter.
Today was the big day that you decided to begin testing. You were beaming with pride as you glanced down at the device sitting on your bedroom work desk.
The metallic device was about a foot tall and wide like a boombox. Its base was covered with various switches and buttons that would make any average person dizzy. Its most prominent feature however was a shiny red bulb hanging down inside the heart of the device. It looked like something straight out of a mad scientists' lab.
“Finally ready to test this baby out~!” You muttered to yourself with a pie-eating grin. Just as you prepared to flick on the device, the bedroom door behind you audibly creaked open...
Upon turning around, you immediately caught sight of your nine year old brother peaking his head through the doorway.
"Kyle! What did I said about coming into my room!?” You groaned with annoyance.
"Err.. I'm not actually IN your room” the boy said meekly, with a hint of playfulness.
"Don't be a smartass. What do you want?" You were already growing impatient with the boy.
"Mom and Dad just left for their trip. They told me to tell you that breakfast is on the table....” Kyle replied.
"Oh crap....they left already?? ...” You muttered, guiltily rubbing the back of your head. You were so busy with your work that you didn't get to see them off.
Both you and your brother were going to be home alone while your parents were away on a weekend long sailing trip.
“Hey, what's that thing???” Kyle asked, staring at the strange looking contraption on your desk. His eyes were gleaming with child-like curiosity.
It took a moment for you to realize Kyle was referring to your matter altering device.
“It's none of your business. Now get out. I'm busy” You curtly replied. Your brother was always such a nosy nuisance whenever he caught wind of your inventions.
“Woaaah, what do all those buttons and switches do??” Kyle persisted as he took a step forward into the room.
Now you were really getting frustrated.
“Kyle, I'm not kidding around! The last time I showed you one of my inventions you ended up breaking it, remember??”
“Aww! Pleeeease~?? I promise I'll be careful this time!” Kyle pleaded, taking another step forward.
Something inside you finally snapped.
“KYLE! Mom and dad are gone for the weekend. That means I'M in charge! So stop annoying me and GET. OUT. OF. MY. ROOM!” you loudly yelled.
The bright playfulness in Kyle's eyes darkened with disappointment. His hurt expression quickly evolved into one of bitterness.
“Fine! I wasn't even interested in your dumb robot anyways!” Kyle yelled as he pulled the door shut with a loud slam.
“It's not a robot! IDIOT” You shouted back while rolling your eyes.
As silence began to fill the room, you let out a sigh of both relief and guilt. You were happy that Kyle had left, but at the same time you felt sort of bad about how you handled the situation.
You and your brother used to be much closer in the past, but a tumultuous rift had begun to form between you in the past year or so. You both had very different personalities and had very little in common. The tension seemed to be getting worse by the day.
You'd actually been planning on reconnecting with him at some point during this weekend, but that seemed pretty unlikely now.
“Well, so much for that..” You shrugged, turning yourself back towards the device.

[an hour of tinkering later]
After taking a few more minutes to make sure that you had properly calibrated the device, you were finally ready to test it out for the very first time
“Alright perfect~ Now I just need my test subject~” You stated, walking over to the adjacent desk and picking up the red apple you'd prepared for the test.
“Well....here's to success...” You muttered, giving the apple a quick kiss for good luck. You placed the fruit in a cavity directly underneath the glowing red orb in the center of the device. Just as you were about to press the activation button, the house phone began to ring.
“Oh come on! Really??” You groaned, lowering your hand away from the device.
