Careening through nightmare visions of the future
This choice: An average space-Joe  •  Go Back...
Chapter #3

An average space-Joe

    by: Unknown
One hundred years into the future, "average" is a bit of a wider concept. So let's start with something simpler.
98% of the total human population - some 272 billion men, women, children, and others less simply described - live within a sphere a mere twelve parsecs in radius, centred on Earth. This is the Inner Sphere, and outside of cultural, economic, and logistical hubs such as Qaaliqat, Prime, and Las Espinas, most residents are involved in agriculture, mining, and transport.
Slightly over half of that- 140 billion people - is concentrated into the various planets, moons, asteroids, and manmade structures of the Sol System. Its demographics are nearly a reverse of the human whole: almost all live in or around urban areas like Zubrin City on Mars, or the South Pole Megalopolis on Luna. However, rural areas still cover much of the available land, especially on outer worlds such as Callisto and Tethys.
This is by no means the case on Earth, with its 64 billion inhabitants living in various states of urbanity - from the nearly-suburban zones of the Sahara and former Amazon to the relatively standard areas that cross North America, the former Russia, and Antarctica, culminating in the incredible density of East Asia and Western Europe.
