This choice: A voice says, 'I'm right here'. • Go Back... You turned around, startled to find James standing behind you with a bemused smile on his face. "Welcome to my little laboratory, sis." smiling, he said. "I take dad told you how to pay me a visit?" you nodded, fearful and James chuckled. "Relax. Outside of a few pranks, I would never intentionally harm you."
"Dad told me all of the boys in our family are mad scientists." regaining some of your composure, you said. "He also told me that you were working on a project of some kind."
"A DNA manipulation experiment." nodding, James replied. he then smiled. "Care to help me with it?"
"I guess." wincing, you replied. "What do I have to do?"
"Not much." leading you deeper into the lab, James said. "You see, I know how much you love fantasy stories and I want to help you experience one of those stories."
"By changing my body into something?" uncertain, you asked. "I'm not sure."
"It's perfectly safe." sighing, James said. he then smiled. "Besides, you already agreed."
With that, he gave you a hard shove and you fell backwards into a floor level tank of water then hit a button on a console before you broke the surface, closing the lid over you. "James!" pounding on the metal lid, you screamed. "Let me out!"
"Activating nanite saturation." ignoring you, James said. "Preparing subject for transformation."
Panic gripped you as you heard this and you began to slam your fists against the lid as hard as you could, kicking your legs in an attempt to push it open. Your panic grew as you felt the water against your body and found that your clothes had somehow turned to dust and was slowly sinking to the bottom of the tank. "This is not funny, James!" terrified, you screamed. "Let me out of here now!!"
"Nanites have successfully integrated with the test subject, activating transformation sequence." still ignoring you, James said. "Observing test subject for any complications."
With that, he hit a button and turned as a glass tank rose from the floor, fully revealing you in the water. He watched you with his face showing full concentration. You wanted to scream profanities at him but a strange sensation throughout your body stopped you cold. You body felt uncomfortably hot. You looked down to find your legs beginning to merge into one appendage with your feet widening and flattening into a dolphin like fin.
"NOOOO!" terrified, you screamed. "What are you doing to me!?!"
James ignored you completely, writing a number of notes onto a pad he was holding then continued to watch with only concentration showing on his face. This hurt you deeply but you were more worried about the changes that were occurring and turned back to find that your legs were gone, replaced with a long scaly tail. Not used to swimming with a tail, you fell into the water but you were surprised to find that you could breathe underwater. This confused you until you realized that you had gills on both sides of your neck, taking in water. "He's turned me into a mermaid!"
Becoming a mermaid was one of your childhood wishes but now it was a nightmare as you knew nothing about how to survive in an underwater world let alone if James could change you back.
"Experiment a complete success." smiling, James said. "The test subject shows no signs of being in any pain and the transformation appears to be stable."
"The test subject has a name!" pounding on the glass, you yelled.
"Sorry, Jessica." smiling, James said. "I have to be disconnected when taking notes; it's nothing personal."
"Well, your experiment was a success, congratulations!" sarcastically, you said. "Now how about changing me back?"
"I'm not done yet." to your horror, James said. "I want you to see something first."
He then hit a switch and you felt yourself being pulled. You looked down and creamed, seeing the water being quickly drained, taking you with it! You swam has hard as you could, trying to fight the current but it was too strong and you were pulled out of the tank through a strange spinning ring with several lights. There was a flash as you passed through it and you found yourself being ejected into what looked like an underwater cave. "Where am I?" shaken, you asked.
Swimming around, you found an opening large enough to swim through and peered out to find that you were somewhere under the pacific ocean, judging by the fish swimming by, meaning you were thousands of miles from home. "Why did James do this to me?" tearing up, you asked. "How am I going to get home?"
Feeling helpless, you sank to the cave floor and began to cry...
