You turned to the door to see Tex and Matt enter. They looked at you, confused, then turned to dad. "Who is this, dad?" Curious, Matt asked. "One of our cousins?"
"This is Jessie, a relative of yours." Grinning, dad explained. "He is just visiting and perhaps staying the night, into the afternoon."
"Did you just move into the area?" Curious, Tex asked. "I don't remember seeing you at school."
"I'm just sort of passing through." Nervous, you muttered.
Dad chuckled. "You may be seeing more of him in the days to come, boys." Startling you, he said. "It all depends upon how things go between him and his father."
"Oh. Well, welcome to our home." Lightly, Tex said. "Maybe we can go fishing later on."
"Yeah." Forcing a smile, you said. "That sounds good."
Tex nodded and walked up the stairs with Matt soon following. Once they were gone, you turned to dad, giving him a dirty look. Only he ignored it. "I could have told them the truth." Smiling, he whispered.
"Why didn't you then?" Darkly curious, you demanded. "You said they would find out soon."
"That I did." Maintaining his smile, dad said. "However, I want them to perceive the truth on their own."
"Dare I ask why?" Your curiosity rising, you asked.
Dad chuckled. "If they do not perceive the truth within the twelve hour limit, it will mean they are not ready to learn about their powers just yet." Patiently, he explained. "One of the first rules of mad science and magic alike, never reveal your power to a sibling or friend until the time is right."
You frowned. "So you are using me to test Matt and Tex?" Unimpressed, you asked.
Dad ruffled your hair. "I knew that you would not back down once you sensed James and I were hiding something from you." Smiling, he said. "So, I decided to let you in on the secret before you dragged your brothers into the fray."
"So what now?" Annoyed, you asked.
Dad grinned at you before pointing to the guest bedroom. "Unless you want to 'spill the beans' on your true identity to your brothers, I suggest you find something to do in the guest bedroom." He chuckled. "I took the liberty of placing your luggage in the room for your stay."
You sighed, frustrated then slowly walked into the guest bedroom. "This sucks!" Pouting, you thought. "I live here, why am I being treated as a guest?"
You sat down onto the bed, unaware that dad was testing you as well.
