Chapter #3

Girl1: 9 - 12 years old

    by: Pseudonym Author IconMail Icon
In a dark cave hidden deep within the Andes Mountains stood the dark, secret and imposing vault which contained the headquarters of a group known as the Dark Alliance. Only - they weren't known. Nobody ever found the vault, and but for a highly secret passage in the obscure cave, even the outer concealed door was inaccessible. Though of course, the group's evil aims necessitated such security arrangements, especially on the occasion of their annual general meeting.

"The Dark Alliance is stronger than ever" hissed a man known only as the Agent "We have now infiltrated the world's major economic and political systems, as well as most of the major social influencers. Operation codename 'take over the world' is going smoothly."

"Operation risks remain" the Secretary reminded him "We must be careful to stick to the plan and not become complacent."

"Indeed" replied the Agent "I don't plan to."

"There is not a man or woman, boy or girl in this world who can stop us now" laughed the Chief softly, fingering a small stone in his hand "Soon, the entire world shall be under my command!"

Meanwhile, in a small town some distance away, three girls, best friends, all aged 11, were walking home together after a Girl Guides meeting. The school year was almost at an end and holiday fever was already gripping the town.

"You keen to hang out at the mall this afternoon?" asked Jessica.
"Yeah, we're all going!" chimed in Sophie "Come on, it'll be fun."
"Sorry girls" replied Eve "I've got soccer practice."
Jessica shrugged. "Suit yourself" she sighed.
"Why do you even play soccer?" asked Sophie "It's such a boy's sport."
"You're just jealous that I get all the boys" laughed Eve.
"Whatever" replied Sophie, rolling her eyes "You probably think you get all the boys just because you play in a mixed team."
"I'll tell you all about how it was when you get back from practice" offered Jessica "That way you won't need to miss out on anything."
"Sounds great, thanks!" replied Eve cheerfully "When will I next see you?"
"Well, we've got school tomorrow, but I can call you tonight" added Jessica.
"Oh yeah - last week of school!" cheered Sophie "High five girls!"

The three girls high fived each other and giggled.

"Well, this is my house" said Eve.
"You live in that run down old thing?" asked Sophie.
"Yeah" said Eve "It's a bit of a shack but my mom can't afford much else."
Sophie shrugged. "It's fine" she winked "You should have a sleepover at my house sometime though."
Eve smiled. Sophie's family were known for being quite wealthy.
"Best friend hug" called Jessica, and the three girls engaged in their ritual hug that they always did when they left each other, before Eve left them to go inside her home.

Finding the spare key under the rock where it always was, Eve walked inside and noticed that her single mother still wasn't home from work. She had to work several jobs to support the family, which left Eve alone around the house most of the time. Eve didn't mind though. It meant that she could always go off and have fun adventures that other girls couldn't.

Dashing quickly to her bedroom as soon as she came inside, she drew the curtains and started to get changed into her soccer gear... a tattered old second-hand set of boots, shin guards and green uniform. Then, she went to the bathroom to tie up her long blonde hair, noticing that it felt unusually smooth. Looking in the mirror, she noticed not only that her hair was shinier than it was before, but her brilliant green eyes were too. She leaned up close to the small mirror that stood above the sink to try and get a better view of her eyes and how they seemed to gleam in the artificial bathroom light, when suddenly...

Eve found herself looking right through the wall.

Letting out a brief scream of shock, Eve jumped backwards and fell on to the bathroom floor. For a moment, she had been sure, she had seen beyond the exterior wall of her house and to the lawn outside beyond the bathroom. Yet now, breathing heavily, the wall was solid as it ever was. She cautiously got up and tapped the wall to be sure. Indeed - no question about it - nothing was different about the wall at all. Eve looked around, wondering if it was some kind of a fluke. Once again, she cautiously tried to look beyond the wall, experimentally trying to focus just a little bit beyond where the mirror was.

Slowly, but surely, the wall blurred away from her vision, and Eve found herself looking right through the wall. Eve put forward her hand again to feel that the wall was still solid - and it was. She was looking through the wall.

"Oh my God..." she whispered to herself as she considered how cool that was.

Deciding to test the power just a little bit further, she decided to try to look through other walls, doing a full scan of her house. Sure enough, she found herself able to look into any given room. She started to notice that faraway or thicker walls were more difficult for her to focus through, but it wasn't really a trouble at all. She even looked inside the walls and amused herself for a moment with following the plumbing and wiring of her house around. She tried looking through her own clothes, into a cactus plant that her mother had in the bathroom... going back to her room, she discovered she could even read pages from a book merely by looking at the cover with a bit of practice.

"This is amazing" she said as she refocused back on to her normal room "I've got to tell Jess and Sophie about this!"

For a moment she wasn't sure where she'd left her cellphone but, using her new power, quickly found it lying around in the living room after another quick scan around the house. She happily skipped to the living room, finding the cellphone exactly where she'd seen it. Picking it up, she relished the opportunity to take a look at all the little circuits inside her cellphone with a giggle, before refocusing to look at her screen.

"Is that the time!?" she shouted as she looked at the little clock on her phone "Looks like I must have gotten carried away with all this..."

Turning towards the park where she practiced, she squinted as hard as she could to see that her team mates had already started arriving. Wasting little time, she started to run out of the house, before remembering that she still had to put the key back and still do up her hair. With another quick scan to remind herself where she'd left it, she hid the key, did her hair, locked the door, and started running down the street to get to practice. "Coach is going to be so annoyed at me when I'm late" she said to herself as she ran.
