Carnivore professional gets carnally vored

The low, whistling calls of her pursuers haunted Doctor Harding as she tumbled swiftly but frantically through the dense, tropic undergrowth. Anxiously, her hands searched the torn clothes barely clinging to her clothes for any remaining darts.

It was a futile task, she knew. Partly because the rifle's barrel had gotten fatally clogged with mud during Kelly's mortal tumble from the bike, and partly because the second she stopped to aim she would be dead meat.

The raptors were too fast for her to outrun on foot for long. In fact, from what she had observed of the speeds these animals could reach, and maintain, she should have been overtaken several times already. She was sure it wasn't because of her evasion skills that she survived still.

Sarah may have been experienced with beasts of the savanna, but in a new world jungle like this she was sorely out of her element. The damned branches kept snagging and tearing at the rips in her clothes from when---

No, she told herself, intensely focusing on maintaining her running speed. There's no point in looking back. He's dead. They're all dead. These creatures have killed them, dragged their bodies away. I'm the last one of us still alive.

And one way or another, I'll be the last one to die.

The yellowish-brown, ruddy-striped head of a juvenile raptor suddenly burst through the foilage just in front of Sarah. The bulk of the animal, individually not much more than a large dog, still seemed almost indomitably imposing, so near and close in front of her.

Adrenaline pumping through her system, her heartbeat thundering in her ears, Sarah grabbed the clogged, useless rifle. Instinctively, almost without even thinking, she swung the weapon in an overhand blow, striking the raptor squarely on the side of its head without even breaking her pace.

But did this desperate gambit work?
