This choice: ... the royal heir needs a bodyguard, a role you can perform most admirably. • Go Back...Chapter #5The Princess's Bodyguard by: WTLamp "I'm sure you remember the assassination attempt upon the Princess last week," Sucressa said.
Amy nodded, with a grim expression on her face. The current heir to Mogoria's monarchy was the eldest daughter of the king, the Princess Anastasia Mogoria, who had just turned 17. It was during the party celebrating her birthday, in fact, that the assassination attempt had occurred. A trio of hooded assailants had leapt from the ceiling, stabbed the princess's bodyguard (a veteran warrior named Mariel), and had nearly gotten to the princess herself before several soldiers had managed to overwhelm them with sheer numbers.
"It looks like Mariel will survive her injuries, but the wounds on her legs didn't heal right. She has had to retire," Sucressa explained, "Which leaves the Princess without a bodyguard. The royal couple asked if there were any among our order who would be up to the task of ensuring that their daughter was safe. I recommended you."
Amy's round face flushed with pride and embarrassment. "Mother... I don't know what to say," she murmured.
"You have served the Order of Gaia faithfully for many years, and have done your brothers and sisters proud. I do not doubt your skill and your compassion," Sucressa said, a smile on her face.
"When do I begin these duties?" Amy asked. There was no need to ask if she would accept the deed; guarding the royal family was an honor that few ever did, and Amy was happy to take up that burden.
"Today, if at all possible. Everyone wants the Princess to be protected as soon as possible," Sucressa answered.
"Then I shall prepare myself for this new duty. Gaia's blessing be upon you, Mother Sucressa," Amy said, before turning to head to her room. There wasn't much to pack, but it was better to have that done quickly.

A few hours later, Amy found herself standing in front of the Princess's room. A servant had led her to a room down the hall where she would be staying, so that she would be close to her charge in case of trouble. Amy was actually very nervous. Princess Anastasia was known far and wide to be a rather generous and kind young woman, and Amy hoped that she would make a good first impression. Slowly, she raised a hand to knock on the door of the Princess's room. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
