Sethryan felt the familiar expression of mud on his face.
Above him, Krogar (the same age as him, but already one of the strongest in the village) laughed along his friends. The village was full of strong males; Sethryan lucked out of the genetic gene pool, being smaller and thinner than pretty much everyone his age.
Sethryan felt a strong hand help him up. He saw Arista, a tall Amazon, as strong as she was beautiful. Along with three quarters of the men in his village (and some of the women deal), Sethryan had a huge crush on her.
"Th-thanks Aristra" he said, somewhat intimidated by her.
"No prob, Sethryan" she said as she smiled warmly, then turned to Krogar.
"You're such an ass, Krogar."
"Hey, I'm just trying to help him out. He's a man, he should be a warrior, not so pansy."
"We're warriors, Krogar. We're supposed to protect the weak, not prey on them!"
As much as he appreciated her standing up for him, Sethryan felt a 'thud' inside at her referral to him as weak.
Krogar stood, then laughed.
"All right, we'll go. It's no big deal, Sethryan, if you're in trouble just call for her to protect you."
He and his group left. Sethryan thanked Aristra then went home.

The next morning, Sethryan stood at the edge of the village. He wielded a sword that belonged to his father. Krogar was an ass but he was right: if he ever wanted to impress Aristra, he would need to be a warrior, an adventurer.
