In a sudden rush, reality seemed to restart but the world around you spun. Your family living room swirled away. A moment later, the world seemed to freeze in place but your brain continued to spin as your eyes struggled to take in the newness of everything around you. A young woman laid with you, her face and arms resting on your chest. She was asleep. Her face hidden behind her blonde hair.
As your eyes focused past her, you noticed that you were no longer lying in your family's living room. Instead you were lying on a bed in a teal-painted room. Several posters were scattered around the room. The posters, you realized, were of a band and movie you and your father both liked in common. On the opposite side was an open closet, with two matching backpacks resting against a wall. On the left was a single window, with curtains drawn, and, to your surprise, another bed. "Why are there two beds?" you whispered aloud. Before you could think further about it, a calendar caught your attention. "2004?!" You gasped.
A breathe ticked the hair on your neck. You turned to your right to see your own face lying peacefully on the same pillow as your own head. Their eyes were closed, but it was like looking into a mirror. It was surreal seeing someone else with your face, but you knew that he was Jason, your twin brother now. "Correction" you said aloud quietly, "conjoined twin brother..." You smiled. "It worked. We're twins for real now, even if we have to share more than most..." Your gaze then shifted back to the calendar. "So... we must be 18 now, from when my dad was originally born. Our birthday was yesterday..."
You felt your chest begin to expand as your brother took in a deep breath of air. Your lungs filled with the breath before being released by Jason. You realized that he was near the point of waking. Your heart skipped a beat. Your mind suddenly spun with questions. 'Would Jason know something was different?' 'Would he have the memories of being your father?' 'Would he think we were born this way?' 'Was the longsword still here?' "Were we born this way?' 'Why are there two beds?'
