Chapter #7

Inheritors of Gemini

Jason, your brother, yawned beside you. Out of the corner of your vision, you saw him rub the sleep from his eyes with his right hand. His head then turned and you were suddenly facing your reflection. "Hey twin..." he said as the one corner of his mouth curved into a smile. A forced smile you realized. Jason seemed to attempt a friendly, brotherly greeting, but you could tell that his heart was not in it.

"Hey twin." you responded, sensing that this was a typical greeting the two of you shared. A long sting of memory was connected to the greeting, something you had mutually come up with in grade school. But your brain was foggy, and whatever new memories of this new reality were still hidden from you.

"Were you awake long before me?" Jason asked.

The question seemed curious to you. But you answered as truthfully as possible. "Not too long. A couple of minutes max."

"I guess that specialist was right... Our hormones or whatever are starting to synchronize. Soon we'll hardly be awake or asleep without the other." Jason said, and you could sense some grief in his tone. He gaze shifted to the ceiling.

You held your tongue from asking what he meant, or why he was... sad. But, your brain raced with more questions. 'Were we not born as conjoined twins? Is this new? How new? What happened?'

"Not like that is so bad... really." Jason spoke, responding to his own statement. "Not like we can do much without each other. It would be terrible having one of us falling asleep while the other wanted to keep gaming." He then turned to face you again, and he smiled again, genuinely this time. "I wouldn't want you stuck in bed waiting for my lazy ass to wake up."

You matched his smile as a small string of memories flowed into your awareness. You could see yourself, not that long ago in the memories, shaking your brother awake so as not to be late for school. Of course, the two of you had separate bodies in that memory. "I'm sure you'll still find a way to eek out those last few precious moments of sleep." you responded.

"Sounds like you to are getting along better..." the sleepy voice of the girl said. Immediately, you recognized it as your mother. Though, when her face turned towards you both, you were shocked at how young she appeared.

"Its not that we weren't getting along." Jason replied. "I can count the number of times we really argued on my hands... our hands. Like the guy said, we spent 18 years in two separate bodies, and waking up suddenly sharing one is going to be challenging. Even for us, clearly. Talk about waking up to an... awesome 18th birthday present." The hint of sarcasm was clear in his voice.

You realized that this, conjoined twin status, really did only just occur. Your birthday, if the calendar was right, was just yesterday. And that fact that brought one big question to mind. 'How?'

Lizzie placed her hand in the center of your chest. You noted that you could feel her palm and thumb gently rub your skin, but you could not feel the rest of her fingers despite them clearly touching your chest. You realized that must have been the 'dividing' line between you and your brother. Where you ended and Jason began, or vice versa really.

Jason sighed and turned to face you. "Sit up?" He asked and you nodded. "On the count of three, we both push our hands..."

"...and push our feet until our back is against the wall." you finished, knowing what your brother was going to say. It shocked you, but Jason did not seem to think anything of it. He counted to three, and in a slightly disjoined first attempt, you and he were successful shifted into a sitting position with your back against the bedroom wall. It was the first time you got a clear look at the body you now shared. It looked just like your own, but with the clear addition of a second head and shoulders which seemed further apart, wider. If you had not just been discussing it, you would have thought that you were born this way. There was no indication that you and Jason used to be a separate pair of twins.

"Realistically, we'll adjust eventually, but... I don't know... This is just all new, and not just sharing a body." Jason said. "Magic is real... and we're the inheritors of Gemini! Nothing could have prepared us for that."
