Chapter #3

Problem Child

    by: Unknown
Jessica peered around the corner of the hall, where she saw three tall, imposing figures engaged in what appeared to be animated discussion. They all immediately caught sight of her and their gabber ceased.

Mrs. Bradley beckoned sweetly for Jessica to join them, which she did, trying to smile and beginning to explain that she had just moved into the area and just visiting her neighbors. Unfortunately for her, the three were too busy cooing and crying with joy at how adorable she looked.

“Oh, Cynthia! She is just the bees-knees!”, screamed a round, solid gal named Mrs. Beatrice Oswald who pinched Jessica’s cheek, thoroughly annoying her.

“Isn’t she just too precious, Beatrice?”, replied Mrs. Cynthia Bradley enthusiastically.

“I do declare! She’s a little princess!”, agreed the overly happy Mrs. Janus Bartholomew as she ran her hand through Jessica’s hair, further annoying her with their touchy-feely way of appraising her.

“Now see here!”, Jessica planted her heels and yelled up at the three women now surrounding her, “I’m a grown woman with a degree and”
“Goodness! Such sass!”, said Mrs. Oswald, looking aghast.

“Lands sake!”, agreed Mrs. Bartholomew.

Mrs. Bradley, the neighbor Jess had visited merely to introduce herself in the neighborhood, looked positively mortified. Then, in a low growl she told Jessica, “Young lady! You may be new to the neighborhood, but you need to understand that we will not tolerate brattiness in our schools and homes here. When can we expect your parents to arrive home this evening? I believe I’ll need to have a little chat with them about your snotty attitude.”

“Fine! You do that you crazy old bat!”, fired back Jessica insolently, “My parents live all the way across the country, though! Now if you’ll excuse me”, and Jess attempted to push past the much heavier Mrs. Oswald, who then wobbled into Mrs. Bartholomew, who in turn knocked a knickknack off of a mantle on the wall, which proceeded to shatter into tiny pieces.

“Jessica!”, cried her host, the mortified looking Mrs. Bradley.

Looking down at the broken curio she had inadvertently caused, Jessica told them, “You are the clumsiest bunch of old biddies I have ever seen! First your tea and now your tacky ornament! Now, if you’ll just excuse me” but suddenly, Jessica felt hands clamp down on either arm as Mrs. Oswald and Mrs. Bartholomew have tight holds on her from either side.

“Why you naughty little…! Such lip on you! Jessica, since your own parents aren’t here to teach you a few manners, I suppose it’s left up to us to teach you proper behavior.”, scolded Mrs. Bradley, who yanked at Jessica's hair, pulling her head back.
