Matt was silent as he went over to check the barricade on the front doors of the mall alongside Leo, a mall security guard, and Janice, one of the shoppers who had been trapped here since yesterday. The day before Matt had stopped by to spend some of the money he had gotten from a few shady dealings to buy some new clothes and supplies before leaving town.
Unfortunately for him, heavy snowfall wasn't the only delay he'd experience during his time in this small town. The dead had risen just the day before and by 9:00 pm the whole building was on lockdown with most of its shoppers still inside. Many people had forced or snuck their way out, but several others remained to secure the doors and windows to prevent the horrors walking outside from getting easy access to them.
Alongside Matt, Leo and Janice were about twenty other people holed up on the second floor in a large Italian restaurant. They had plenty of food and water to last for weeks, though some people were getting restless after being forced to spend the night there. Matt was fairly indifferent to the whole situation, he had stayed at better places for sure, but also worse places. Such was life on the road.
"Up here, give me a boost." Leo said as he climbed onto a washing machine and grabbed ahold of a table leg for balance. With a small shove Matt and Janice got him high enough to see out the windows above the piled furniture and junk. It was about an hour past noon and the parking lot outside was a flurry of snowflakes above a thick blanket of white.
"Looks like we got about 3-5 inches." Leo said as he climbed back down. "Some of those undead fucks are still walking around too, I counted about a dozen hanging around the doors." Matt frowned at the prospect of being snowed in here for days while those things multiplied outside. He wasn't afraid for his safety, though he certainly didn't want to spend weeks here while he waited for help to arrive.
"What should we do? Do you think we can clear a path through them?" Janice asked as she turned to Matt. He simply shrugged and turned back to look over the barricade again...
