Scares, spooks, and the supernatural. All of these played a key part in the origins of Halloween, where candies were offerings to the malevolent spirits of yore, and costumes served a vital role as an important camouflage. These ancient traditions have given way to the more relaxed Halloween of modern times, focusing more on candy and costumes as avenues of fun instead of fright. But sometimes the traditional ways are the best. For those looking for a true fright from zombies, ghouls, and all that goes bump in the night, haunted houses continue to serve this purpose.
Whether the house and its haunts are provided by willing volunteers, or merely an abandoned ruin with one too many ill rumors floating about, there are still plenty eager to prove their courage or to have the pants scared off of them, figuratively speaking of course. However, one unlucky person is going to lose a lot more than that during their haunting, adding a new fear that they are most assuredly unprepared for.
