On her knees, June feels the miniaturized grass with her palms, receiving a thicker, bristled touch on her skin. She pulls the headphones from their rest and sets them on the ground with the player. The music booms freely through the air, people cover their ears while hurrying away in vehicles or on foot. June in blank awe watches all this from her lofty vantage point. She turns to look over her shoulder and is assaulted by the sharp branches and leafy shield of a tree.
She cries out from the jab and leaps to her feet, a quake rumbling through the ground with her hop. Putting her palm over the pain, she sees a new group of students and teachers fleeing from inside the building. They pour out through the doors, and even windows, and sprint for the parking lot, or straight into the dense woods of the nearby hills, but no one approaches her. She stands there alone, left to look over her new stature.
While nothing about her own size looked any different to her, she now realizes at full height how gigantic she is compared to everything around her. The tallest of the school buildings only reach up to her knees, and the tallest tree in the yard is now below her breast. She reaches her hand out in front of her, and awes at the reach she has, swearing she could touch the clouds if she was on tiptoe. Then June looks down at her once small, black shoes, now capable of crushing cars better than any popular monster truck. Her eyes pop up. 'Am I a monster?' she mouths, considering the potential energy she now possesses.
At the thought, her hands clasp over her lips mouth, right leg lifts to her left knee. Her eyes see inward at herself, while her foot thrusts outward, downward, crunching her CD player to oversized chunks of plastic and computer chips. The music dying below her feet, she reaches down to survey the damage with her fingertips, hair falling down as veil around her face. Touching the debris she created, June looks into the distance for assistance.
