Transfixed by the transposer, you float there, your feet no longer on the floor and your head lost in daydreams. You're no longer in the laboratory, but transported elsewhere to a fantastical future made possible by the device held in your two hands. Clueless to the sights and sounds around, you glide backwards to the door that must still be there. The room gradually returns to its original decoration. Time to go.
Your hands shake. You reach for your bag, cradling the matter transposer gently in one hand. A metallic sound rattles behind you an instant before you are stuck hard in the lower back. Knocked forward and thrown off-balance, you toss the transposer into the air. It hovers at eye level, twisting and flipping in slow-motion. Instinct takes control as the gun begins to fall. Your hands snatch hold of the gun and pull it tightly to your stomach.
There's a sudden blinding flash and the matter transposer has disappeared from your grasp. It doesn't take long to understand what happened. You're much, much smaller than you were a few seconds ago. The transposer, unchanged and enormous, rests on the ground behind you.
