A plain, unattractive tiara

“What’s that?” asked Rob.
“It looks like… half a crown.”
Jackson showed it to Rob. “That’s a tiara,” said Rob. He took it in his hands and turned it over. “A very ugly one,” he added. It looked to be made of copper, now dull and rusted, with three prongs projecting from the forehead that had been chipped away until they were almost flatheaded. Nothing else distinguished it, no gemstones or baroque engravings. “This was in my bag?”
Jackson nodded. “I saw it fall out.”
Rob pursed his lips. “I don’t know how it could have fit in there…”
“Maybe your grandma gave it to you. She slipped it in there. I don’t know.” Jackson shrugged. “’Have a good first day of school.’ Something to surprise you.”
