Derrick and Marcy play

    by: Michelle Author IconMail Icon
As an exact copy of Marcy, Derrick wagged his tail and began running around with her. They barked at each other racing through the house. After spending most of the day ‘posing’ and modeling dresses for Mom, it was a nice change for Derrick to have some fun. The noise of the two dogs playing was getting too loud and Mom finally yelled, “Go outside if you want to run around like that!”

She opened the door as Derrick and Marcy ran outside. The sun felt warm on Derrick’s fur. He took a few steps into the backyard and was overloaded with new scents. The most exciting part of turning into a dog was the enhanced sense of smell. Derrick wandered around the backyard smelling everything and experimenting with his nose. Derrick’s ears instinctively perked up when he noticed a squirrel running across the lawn. Marcy was first to react and ran after it. The squirrel made it to a tree for safety. Chasing the squirrel looked fun. Derrick began searching for another one so he could try catching it.

Derrick was getting bored. It rained earlier that day so there were puddles in the backyard. Wanting to cool down, Derrick rolled into a wet puddle of mud. He wasn’t worried about getting dirty because he could always shapeshift out of the situation. Rolling in the mud felt great and soon Derrick’s fur was covered in mud. Marcy was watching this, and got curious too. She joined in and began rolling around in the mud. Derrick thought, “Uh oh! She is going to need a bath after this!” Derrick groaned knowing that Aunt Lauren would probably make him give Marcy a bath because it was his fault she was getting so dirty.

Hearing laughter from the next door neighbors, Derrick looked through the chain link fence to realize he had an audience. Derrick was so busy running around and having fun as a dog, that he hadn’t noticed his next door neighbors were outside. They were laughing at seeing the 2 dogs get so dirty.

Derrick wasn’t sure how much time had passed, but he knew his shapeshifting power was going to run out soon. Derrick couldn’t use his shapeshifting power outside because the next door neighbors were so close and could see into their yard. Needing to get back inside so nobody witnessed a dog suddenly turning into a teenaged boy, Derrick barked by the door to be let in. After a few minutes of patiently waiting, Derrick barked again. Derrick thought, “Why isn’t Mom letting us in?” Derrick barked and scratched at the backdoor trying to catch the attention of Mom or Aunt Lauren. With no place to hide and shapeshift in the backyard, Derrick began getting worried. He barked louder and louder causing even more attention to the neighbors. Finally through the window, Derrick saw Mom approaching the door, “Finally!” Derrick thought wagging his tail as Mom began to open the door. It was too late however. Before Mom let Derrick and Marcy inside, the shapeshifting medallion re-appeared with a loud, “clunk” on the patio. Derrick looked down and let out a shrill bark.

Mom and Aunt Lauren looked at the filthy dogs outside. Mom picked up the shapeshifting medallion and put it in her pocket. She scolded Derrick, “How could you let your shapeshifting powers run out! Now you are stuck as a copy of Marcy until you can use the medallion again!” Derrick let out a whimper and tried walking inside. Mom stopped him, “Not so fast! You and Marcy are covered in mud! You can’t go inside and get my house dirty!”

For the next 10 minutes, Mom attempted to hose off the dirty dogs. The mud was thick and barely coming off. Aunt Lauren decided, “This is going to take forever! We need professional help! We are going to have to take them to the groomer!” Derrick’s ears perked up and he let out another confused whimper as to say, “huh?”

Mom agreed, “This is your fault Derrick for getting so dirty and being irresponsible with the shapeshifting medallion. The cost of this is coming out of your allowance too!”

Derrick hung his head low as Mom led both dogs to the driveway. They jumped in the back of Aunt Lauren’s truck and she drove to the groomer.
