Me the king! There must be some kind of mistake. While I am trying to let it all soak in, one of the nobles lunges for me with his sword drawn.
"He's got no right to be the king!" He screams. Several other nobles come to my defense. Some king I am, I just stand there like an idiot, like I am watching all of this happening to someone else. The official summons the royal guard and takes the noble into custody. He tells me I must decide the man's fate. Attempted assassination of a king is punishable by death but ultimately, the decision is mine to make.
I mutter that I will reach a decision in the morning. I am then escorted by my guards to a sleeping chamber. Not that I will be getting much sleep tonight, between deciding on another man's fate and the lurking assassin, I'm pretty sure it is going to be a long night.
Sometime in the early morning hours, the official from last night, Minister Carthos, comes to speak to me about my decision. He tells me of the importance of the noble, and that condemning him to death will most likely mean all-out war, but if I don't have him executed, the other nobles will think me weak.
"This is your trial by fire, choose wisely," he said.
