Chapter #4

A Brother/Sister Body Swap

by: Homer J Simpson Author IconMail Icon
The entire room went black the moment Hannah finished reciting whatever she was reading. John slowly regained consciousness a few minutes later, and immediately realized something was wrong. For starters, his vision was suddenly blocked by some long blonde hair. What the hell? When he brought a hand up to move the hair out of the way, he was surprised to see it was suddenly much smaller and daintier than before.

Wanting to know what was going on, he got to his feet and ran over to the mirror on the back of his door. If the blonde hair and dainty hands were a surprise, John was positively floored by what he saw in the mirror. Instead of seeing a reflection of himself wearing his shorts and Call of Duty t-shirt, he saw a reflection of Hannah wearing her favorite violet-colored dress. No, this can’t be happening!

John’s fears were quickly realized when the reflection in the mirror copied every move he made; down to the horrified expression on his face. Suddenly feeling overwhelmed, John screamed at the top of his lungs. After screaming for a moment, John stopped when he heard groaning coming from behind him. Turning around, he saw his body turn over onto its back.

John didn’t need to be a genius to figure out that if he was Hannah’s body, she was likely in his. Running over to his body, suddenly aware of how much bigger everything was, he started shaking his body. “Hannah, is that you?”

Hannah slowly opened her eyes; only for them to bug out when she saw who was standing over her. “Who are you and why do you look like me?”

While Hannah became aware of the fact that her voice was different, John looked at her and said, “Hannah it’s me, John.”

“John?” Looking at him, Hannah said, “Why do you look like me?”

“Probably for the same reason you look like me.”

Sitting up, Hannah said, “What are you...”

Hannah stopped mid-sentence when she saw her reflection in the mirror. Seeing the horrified look on her face, John said, “What exactly did you read from that book, Hannah?”

“I-I don’t know.” Running her hands over her new body, Hannah said, “It said it was supposed to help two people understand each other better.”

“We’re in each other’s bodies; I think it’s safe to say it did that.”

Making her way over to the mirror, Hannah started touching her face. “What are we supposed to do now?” turning to John, scared, Hannah said, “I don’t want to be an icky boy?”

“Do you seriously think I want to be you?” spotting the book on the floor, John said, “The spell you used came from that book; see if there’s a way to undo it.”

Hannah went over to grab the book. John watched as she ruffled through the book for a moment. Closing the book, she said, “I don’t get it, the pages are blank.”

That jogged John’s memory a little bit; remembering something he noticed when he first found the book. “I noticed some writing earlier that said the book isn’t for male eyes.” Sighing, John said, “I’m a girl now, so maybe it’ll work for me.”

Handing the book to John, Hannah said, “It’s worth a try.”

Meanwhile, downstairs, Melanie was walking into the house; having stayed at school to chat with some friends. Placing her bags on the floor, she was surprised to find the house seemingly empty. “Hello? Is anyone home?”

She was about to walk into the kitchen to get a drink when she heard movement upstairs. Going upstairs, she heard voices coming from John’s bedroom. As she got closer, she realized they belonged to John and Hannah. Walking up to the closed door, she listened as John said, “Can you see anything?”

“I’m not sure.” Pausing, Hannah said, “There’s definitely some writing here, but I’m having a hard time making it out.”

Wondering what they were talking about, Melanie opened the door to find Hannah holding the family spellbook in her lap. Running into the room, before John or Hannah could react to her presence; she grabbed the book and said, “Hannah, you shouldn’t be reading this! It’s far too dangerous!”

“It’s a little late for that, Mel.” Looking at her, Hannah said, “I’m not Hannah, I’m John.”
