As it turned out, Piper was talking about stepping in on the KISS102.5 table, located centrally in the pier. There was a big van with 102.5 painted across the doors, a table with an awning set up over it, and loud speakers that carried the station's sound across the pier.
"Ugh, Jesus. Radio people." Piper said scornfully as she curled an olive nostril at the two women seated at the table, "Gawd, just bait for the tourists. May as well wrap those girls up in fishing wire and put them out over the ocean."
"Do people still... y'know, listen to the radio?" Zack inquired earnestly, "Because I don't think I've ever actually listened to the radio."
"It's just some Top-40 bullshit station with some gimmicky morning show." Piper said dismissively, "Trust me, you're not missing out on much."
Dakota held her tongue. Back home, she'd actually enjoyed listening to the radio in her Dad's car whenever he let her drive it. On her way to school, on days that her Mom didn't have to go to work, Dakota used to tune into the local top forty station and crank the volume up so high that her vice principal once threatened to rip her stereo system out. She didn't know too much about these local guys, but she couldn't in all honesty join in on the jeering.
"So... what are we doing here then?" Dakota asked with a raised eyebrow as she talked over the blaring pop music, "Since, y'know, radio is like... so lame."
"We're here because the Kissing booth over there is giving away prizes!" Piper shouted, pointing towards the clear entry box with plenty of fold up forms already inside it, "Some stupid promotion about Summer. There was a pun about beaches. I don't even know."
There were two women at the booth; a fit-looking brunette with large breasts and a shorter one with curly hair. Their sign in front of them advertised them as Cass Mason and Marni Smith—local radio DJs for KISS102.5— and gave a brief overview of the contest that they were conducting.
Welcome our girls to Daven's Port by entering to win 102.5 thousand dollars! followed by lost of legal jargon that Dakota probably could have read better if Katy Perry wasn't blaring like, directly into her fucking ear drum.
"Hey sweetie!" cried the shorter woman—Marni?— over the call of the speaker, "You guys here to enter? You know you've gotta be at least eighteen to win!"
"Yeah yeah, I got it." Piper flashed her driver's liscence, "Just give us a form, lady!"
"Alright, good luck!" she said, cheerfully in her seat to the overly peppy pop music, "Here's one for your friend too—you too cutie, that's right, I see you!" she said with a playful finger wave to Zack, who stepped forward.
All three of them stepped forward and dropped their names in the box.
"Just hang out with us for a few minutes, we're about to announce the winners." the other, taller woman ushered them politely, "At two and a half minutes after one, we'll all know who wins the grand prize. Think you guys'll win?"
"We better." Piper crossed her arms as Cass took the box behind the table and shook it, "There's three of our entries in there."
So Dakota and piddly posse waited for another fifteen minutes, bearing the volume of the music and the obnoxiousness of the college bros and tourists who passed them by. Finally the alarm clock rang, and the music came to a whisper as a small crowd gathered around the booth.
"Hey everyone, it's me! Cass from the KISS102.5 Morning Show—that's Marni over there with the box!" she addressed the rowdy crowd, "This is just a little thank you from all us at our studio for helping us rock the Summer like no one else can, and giving us girls a warm, beach-side welcome to our new hometown!"
The crowd cheered happily
"Without further adieu, let's announce the winners of our 102.5 Thousand dollar Cash Prize Contest!"
The three friends held on with baited breath as Marni opened the box in front of her, stuck in her arm, and pulled out a slip of paper...
