"I don't know, Zack, I kinda just had breakfast..."
"So don't get anything! Just come on, I'm starving!"
Dakota wasn't exactly keen on fast food. She never had been. At least, not the kind that came through a drive-thru. Her mother had usually been home from work early enough to have dinner ready on the table, and on the off chance she had to fend for herself Dakota was pretty adept at using the microwave. But even back home, while all her friends used and abused their local McDonalds and Jack-in-the-Boxes with their new cars around graduation time, Dakota had never really bought into the whole fad.
Even still, it wasn't like she had anything better to do. Besides, it was no secret that Zack didn't have the best home life. Anything that got him out of the house was a good thing; even the usually callous Piper knew that.
Still, his choice in dining left much to be desired...
"Big Burger, really?" Piper slammed her car door, "You dissed all my awesome ideas so you could get yourself a hamburger?"
"Hey, I dissed all your ideas so I could get a cheeseburger, thank you very much." Zack retorted confidently as he hurried ahead of the two of them, "Besides, it's not like you're much for fine dining."
"Little shit." Piper rolled her eyes as she hurried ahead, leaving Dakota trailing behind them...
Inside was a strange and confusing place. Dakota recognized Big Burger from her home town—despite the fact that they'd only had the one, and she'd only been inside a handful of times. It was supposed to be this retro 50's sort of place, but with an indoor eating area. Lots of chrome. And red. Dakota reckoned it's what people from the 1950's would have thought McDonalds would have looked like in the future, minus the robots.
"I'll have one number 1 combo with a Sprite..." Zack said to the redheaded girl behind the counter, "Make that a large." he said a little more confidently as he scraped out a five from his wallet.
"One #1 with a Sprite, large!" the hostess said into the microphone, her voice surprisingly cute and perky, "Anything else for you?"
"Nope, I'm good." Zack said with a frown as he collected his change, "That's kinda all I've got."
The redheaded waitress took a second and reached back towards the microphone
"And an apple pie, on the house!" she chirped"
"Seriously?" Zack said with a smile, "Thanks!"
Dakota watched Zack practically skip away and claim them a booth near the window while Piper went ahead and placed her own order; a large plate of chili cheese fries and a Coke. Dakota had never really thought about what she would order, but they had an awfully big selection. It was sort of intimidating, especially considering that she was suddenly feeling pretty peckish...
"And for you, Miss?" the redheaded hostess said with a smile
"U-Uh..." Dakota stammered, trying her best not to stare at the menu and play it cool, "S-Some chicken nuggets."
"Okay, would you like the six, eight, twelve, or twenty count?" the smaller girl said with an unfaltering smile
"U-Uh eight, I guess?" Dakota said as she whipped out her debit card, "And a, uh, Dr. Pepper..."
