Mariko grabbed her book bag, which also had a day's supply of diapers in it, started walking to her middle school, which was thankfully only two blocks away. She had just left her house when one of her friends, another Japanese girl named Kaori, noticed her. Kaori normally looked a lot like Mariko, a bit on the short side and skinny. They were both petite, as Kaori's mother liked to say. It was said that they could be mistaken for sister... except for the fact that Kaori had dyed her hair pink now.
"Mari! Hey Mari!" Kaori said, running over to her friend.
"Hi Kaori. Hey, when did you dye your hair pink? It looks really nice!" Mariko said.
"Yesterday. My mom helped me with it. I thought she would flip out when I told her I wanted pink hair but she actually thought it was a cool idea." Kaori said.
"Ha, lucky. My mom would've yelled at me and said it makes me look like a cartoon character or a punk or something." Mariko said.
"So, did you study for the algebra test today?" Kaori asked.
"A little. I'm pretty strong in algebra, so I've been looking more at my science notes." Mariko said.
