After the invasion, Queen's forces procured the laboratory. With that, they've been producing chemicals to benefit them, either to benefit themselves (increase their assets, increase their overall size, etc.), or to handicap prey (shrink them, make them like putty, etc.). They've been making drinkable formulas, aerial agents, and more. Aliens of all types worked on these formulas, and other aliens guarded the facility. There were either the classic cat ladies, other aliens, or ladies wearing lab coats over lingerie. You've heard about how Queen frequented the place to get material.
As for the convention, its allure was a bit of a mystery to those not affected. When the invasion began, a convention was in progress, and the remnants of geek culture were left behind when Queen cleaned house. The aliens seemed to have fashioned it into some sort of museum, examining the remnants of a society, now reduced to drones for their kind. A lot of them even dressed up like characters from all sorts of media. Of all aliens, you hadn't expected Queen to check it out, but she's been spotted frequenting the place from time to time.
