Chapter #3

Josh's mom wonders why he was wet and late

    by: yugglopo Author IconMail Icon
Once he reached his room, Josh quickly swapped his soaking wet clothes out for a cleaner, drier set. He immediately got started with his biology homework since he wanted to know what Jenn was talking about if she did in fact come over later to study. Josh figured he was in the clear after 5 minutes, but was still a bit embarrassed and wanted to refrain from telling his odd story.

Josh was making progress on his work when he heard a knock on his door. "Come in!" He called, hoping the person about to enter had a different topic to touch on other than his untimely and unconventional arrival. He stayed focused on his work but immediately knew who had walked in.

"There you are Joshua." His mother said using his real name, which she did every once in awhile.

Josh immediately started to get nervous. "Hey mom, home from work early?"

"Yes I am. I just came to ask though," she took a seat on his bed. "Are you doing okay? You didn't even greet me or either of your sisters when I heard you walk in, and Brianna said you were dripping wet."

Realizing he was caught, he just decided to tell the truth. "Yeah, I missed the bus and got caught in the rain."

"Well, make sure to be faster so you can get to the bus next time. I don't want you walking out alone like that, especially in this type of water." She said with the overprotective mother in her kicking in. "What about your umbrella? I thought I told you to take it to school before you left this morning."

Josh couldn't think of an excuse, so he just told his mom most of the truth. He took a seat next to her explained how he had met the old woman at the bus stop and took sympathy for her and her situation, he stopped at giving her the umbrella though and made no mention of the power.

"That's good, I'm proud of you for that." Kim praised her son.

"Really? Your not mad?"

"How could I be mad?" She questioned. "Those are the type of kind deeds and respect that I try to instill in you kids." She continued, giving her son a light pat on the back. "Sadly, you do a better job than the others."

"Why, what's wrong?" Josh asked concerned.

"Your sisters have been talking back more lately. Courtney had an attitude because I refused to drive her and her friends to the mall. Then Bri got angry because I wanted her to start some of her homework since she has a game each of the two days this weekend."

"That stinks."

"Well, it's part of being a mother."

"I guess so."

"And I wouldn't trade it for the world. Although I could use a day or two off." She said jokingly.

"Trust me mom, I would gladly take your place if it meant you had some time off." He said. What happened next after that surprised Josh. A bright flash occupied his room for a very brief moment, which also left his mother with a very surprised look on her face.

"What happened?" She asked.

"I'm not sure." Josh said, as he was very confused himself.

Seeing as nothing appeared to be different, the mother and son duo decided to ignore it. That was, until another visitor entered the room. "Mom, are you in here?" Bri opened the door. "There you are. Do you know where my soccer jersey is?" She asked, but weirdly looking straight at Josh.

"It's hanging up in the laundry room downstairs." Their mother answered.

"Alright..." Bri replied with a look of confusion. "Thanks Kim."

Her mother didn't seem to like the fact that her daughter by her first name. "Excuse me young lady, I am your mother. You should show me some respect and not call me that!"

"What do you mean? You're my big brother." She replied not understanding. "Why are you acting so weird?"

"Quit it with the nonsense Brianna! I am your mother and you WILL show me some respect!"

What the youngest in the family did next was surprising. She approached Josh and grabbed him tightly, almost as if he was being used as protection. "What's Kim talking about mom? She questioned with a look of fear in her eye. "I'm scared."

"Uhhh..." Was all Josh could let out.

Luckily, Bri spoke up before her 'brother' could yell at her again. "Are you okay mom?" She inquired with her eyes on Josh.

"Umm... could you give us a second?" He asked Bri, finally making a realization.

"Sure." She replied before dashing out of the room and closing the door behind her.

"Care to explain Joshua?" His mother asked with her arms folded.

"There MIGHT have been a part I left out about my story earlier." He went on to explain this supposed power, that he was still having a hard time believing he actually had. "I think when I said I would gladly take your place for a couple of days, we swapped places in the family tree. That means I'm the mother and you're the oldest son."

"That's impossible." Was all she could respond with. Kim had never been a big believer in magic, even during her younger years.

"You have a more logical explanation?"

"Fine, I guess that flash was enough proof anyway." She gave in, still with a chunk of denial hiding within.

"So, should we swap back then? Josh proposed.

"Actually not yet." His mom said with a smile.

"Wait, what?" He asked surprised.

"Well, I said I wanted a couple of days off. I meant it."

"But I don't know how to be a mother!" Her son argued.

"Consider it a learning experience. You can see what it's like to go through what I do and we can learn more about your, well I guess my siblings and see them in a different light."

"Alright, let's do it then." He agreed. "But we'll swap back Sunday night."

"Okay then, see you around MOM!" Kim said laughing before she left. Josh was actually kind of glad, he hadn't seen her so happy in a long time.
