He quickly found a blue, 'retro' looking 'School House Rock' T-shirt and slipped it over his head. Just in time too, because just then he heard a light rapping on his door. "Yeah?" He called out to the mysterious visitor behind the doorway. The door creaked open and in walked his younger sister, Courtney, carrying her clothes under her arm so that she can put them away in her room. "Hey there Courtney, what's going on?" He asked as he picked up the drenched shirt and tossed it into the hamper across the room. As he watched it go in the hamper, he chuckled as he remembered back to his Middle School basketball days.
"Why are you so wet?" She asked him as she eyed both him and the shirt that he recently tossed into the hamper. "What happened to your umbrella?"
"You probably wouldn't believe me if I told you." Josh sighed as he motioned her to his used office chair next to his desk. "Do you need help with something?" Courtney nodded and caused her strawberry blonde hair to fall into her eyes.
"No, I was just putting my clothes away before I get grounded again." She replied with a sigh as she grabbed the rogue pieces of hair and brought them back behind her ear in an attempt to bring them back under her control. Courtney then placed the clothing on his bed and groaned as she watched them fall over, coming unfolded in the process. "I hope you don't mind if I lay them here?"
"Oh, not at all." Josh chuckled as he lay down on his bed next to her clothing.
"So, what happened to you today after you missed the bus?" Courtney wondered as she started to refold her clothes, taking care to make them the way that their Mom loves so much.
Josh knew he couldn't keep it to himself forever so he told her the story. How the rain seemed to come down in sheets, how he met up with the older lady that had the creaky walker, and how she gave him the 'gift'. "That's about it." Josh replied as he sighed in relief and attempted to regain his breathing after spilling out the entire story with a single breath.
"So you don't really believe in that mumbo jumbo, do you?" Courtney laughed as she thought about magic. She had always been much more down to earth than her other siblings and didn't really believe in magic.
"Well, I haven't really had a chance to think about it, honestly." Josh said as he looked at the hamper that he tossed his clothes earlier.
Courtney looked down at her clothes grimaced at the amount of clothing she had accumulated over the years. Just as she did, her hair began to fall into her face once more. "I wish that this hair would just stay where it supposed to be." She grumbled as she brought it back behind her ear.
"Well, I would certainly take it off of your hands if I could." Josh said to her reassuringly as he gently patted her on her back to emphasize the point.
"And I would gladly give it to you." She chuckled as the both closed their eyes because of a blinding light filled the room. "What happened?" Courtney asked as she brought her hands up to her head to relieve a scratch. What happened next would make her believe in magic. Her once strawberry blonde hair had turned into short, cropped hairstyle a boy would wear. "My hair!" She responded as she looked over at her brother who seemed to be having the same problem.
"Why do you have my hair and I have yours?" Josh wondered as he tried in vain to get his new mane of hair under control.
"I don't know?" She replied as she continued to feel her hair. "You just said that you would take it off my hands if you could."
"And then the flash of light happened." Josh interrupted as he played the story out in his head. His new hair started to get in his eyes once more and he grew more aggravated with it. Taking it firmly in his hands, Josh balled it up and threw it behind him.
"You can't do that." Courtney said angrily as she made her way over to him. "You're going to get it all knotted up. Maybe if we redo what happened, we can get out hair back." She suggested.
"I guess that could work." Josh agreed as he patted the bed right next to him so that she could sit down too. "I would gladly take it off of your hands if I could." Josh announced and closed his eyes as he anticipated the blinding light. After now seeing the light, he reopened his eyes. "What happened? Why didn't it work like it was supposed to?"
Courtney sat there for a moment and thought about it. "Oh..." She squealed with delight. "And I would give it to you." The blinding light came back once more and after the two of them were able to come back to their senses, they brought their hands up to their heads to feel their hair. "I'm back to normal." Courtney said happily as she bounced up and down on the bed.
"Me too." Josh replied back to her and sighed in relief.
"I guess that lady did give you something." Courtney said to her brother. "I guess we both have to agree for it to work." Josh sat there for a moment to think about what had just transpired. "But I do have something to ask of you." She then turned to her brother and looked in his eyes. "I have something that I have to do tomorrow morning, but I have to meet up with Christina to go clothes shopping. So I was wondering if I could borrow your friends so that I won't have to choose which one to do."
"I guess I can." Josh answered back to her. "How long will I need to keep it for?"
"Just until until bedtime tomorrow?" She suggested. "So will you swap friends with me until tomorrow?"
"I guess we can do that." Josh replied tentatively, but that seemed to be good enough for his new found power to work and the blinding light soon enveloped the two of them once again. "I don't feel any different." He said to his sister but soon found her looking at his computer and noticed all of his friends replaced hers on his Facebook account.
"Thanks." Courtney chuckled as she looked at her brother who had a grim look on his face. "Oh it's alright. I mean, it's not like you're going to my beauty pageant..."
Josh's eyes grew 2 sizes when he heard this. "No, that is one thing I'm not going to do." He replied as he brought his hands up to protect himself from the thought of having to parade himself in front of the crowd.
"It's not that bad, but we can certainly trade some other stuff and I'm sure you've always wanted to see what its like to be a girl." She suggested to him. "It might even get you a girlfriend."
"No, I'm perfectly happy being a guy and I'm just not ready to have a girlfriend yet." He announced as he folded his hands across his chest.
"Right..." She said smiling as she began to bait him into something. "I bet you're too scared to make another swap."
"I'm not scared." Josh announced proudly. "I'm sure I could handle almost anything that you would suggest." He stuck out his chest to show his bravery.
"Okay." Courtney replied back to him. "How about we swap _________ and you can prove it to me." indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
