Times were busy at Gerbert Gerbil’s Pizza what with a double birthday. Two party days always meant the kitchen was hopping. Sandy, one of the main cooks, could barely keep up with precariously balancing two wide trays with fresh out of the oven pizza, ooey-gooey bubbling cheese on both and crisp pepperoni on one of them.
She could hear the echoes of the screaming kids all the way down the checkered halls of the pizza joint, past the kitchen and prize corner towards one of the private party rooms.
“Who’s ready for pizza?” Sandy asked. A veritable hoard of little kids in their party hats and cardboard animal masks screamed in excited jubilation at the prospect of pizza. She sat down both of the pizzas on the table and they were almost devoured on the spot. One of them already had a piece missing, which shocked Sandy until somebody tugged on her uniform.
It was a little girl in a purple Hippo Don mask. She lifted it up. “Could we get some more soda too?”
“Well aren’t you the sweetest!” Sandy had a real soft spot for kids. Given the crappy hours, the inadequate staffing and poor quality supplies Sandy would have left Freddy’s for a better job if it wasn’t for the delight on the children’s faces.
Sandy bent over, noticing the youngsters pink party dress. “Let me guess, you’re the birthday girl?”
“Yes! I’m finally 8!”
“You’re so cute I could pinch your cheeks,” Sandy said, although she refrained from doing so. “I’ll get some more soda, what’s your favorite? Cola? Mountain Dew?”
“Grape soda.”
“A girl after my own heart that’s one of my favorites.” Sandy could see herself in this little girl. Especially given the snugness of the pink party dress. Sandy had always been a pudgy girl that had grown into a fat young woman, by this point in her life she’d gotten comfortable with that. “Eat up, I’ll be back with more soda.”
Sandy left the party room with a smile on her face. Until she realized where the missing slice of pizza had gone…
