The ride home was quiet and unpleasant. Mom was becoming dangerously furious trying to get a hold of dad on her cellphone while you did your best to calm an increasingly distressed brother because of it. "His dormant magic is like a shield." Frowning, you thought. "Unless he can calm himself down, he risks it activating, making him a girl for life and a witch."
"Mom is not really mad at you, bro." Trying to be comforting, you said. "It's dad she's angry with..."
"I should have told her." Whimpering, Joe said. "I- I just got so caught up in it..." He shook his head, terrified. "I should have told her..."
You sighed seeing Joe's left hand glowing slightly. "You need to calm down, Joe." Serious, you said. "I told you, mom and I are not that mad at you."
Upon reaching home, mom gave up trying to get a hold of dad and turned to Joe. "Where is this lab?" Forcefully, she demanded.
Shaking, Joe lead you and mom to the basement where he pointed to a narrow door between the washer and drier. Mom opened the door and peered in before stepping back with a long thin rod in hand. "This is for your own good, Joe." Firmly, she said.
before Joe could utter a word of protest, mom fired a light from the rod and you heard an explosion before the door vanished as if it were never there. You winced as all the color drained from Joe's face. "Dad gave that to me!" Distraught, he screamed. "What did you do?!"
Rather than answering, mom caused the wooden rod to vanish and turned to you. "Take him to his room." Her voice quivering, she said. "I am too annoyed to council him at the moment."
If Joe wasn't distressed before, he certainly was then. He screamed then...
