On my shoulder

    by: Unknown
Vulcan carefully placed you on his shoulder and waited until you gave the go ahead, to which you nodded as you made eye contact before quickly shooting your head down, feeling those sharp yellow eyes stab you. You waved one last goodbye to Torin as you left the shelter, while he gave a concerned yet reassuring smile back. Your new owner continued his pace in silence as you gave a blank expression to the ground beneath you, in awe and fright at the view from this height. You gripped onto the lizard’s shoulder fabric like you were trying to rip a carrot from the ground, it felt like you would easily slide off at any moment. You were startled by a giant clawed hand firmly placing itself on your body, “You alright little buddy?” your owner asked likely noticing your discomfort. “Just thought you’d want some fresh air is all, I can put you in my pocket if that makes you feel better.”
“I-I’m fine, thanks.” You responded. “…Are you sure, looks like you’re having some trouble ther-“
“I said I’m fine, thanks!” you exclaimed. Vulcan mistook you for shy because he seemed a bit surprised by your outburst, he didn’t want to argue with you so he let you do as you want. You didn’t really want this dragon thinking you were some push over that he could have his way with, although admittedly the sight of his enormous head was enough to make you wary. For now, you were focusing on keeping your balance on his stiff shoulder, trying to get comfortable while your wrists got sore from maintaining your grip. Torrin hadn’t brought you out since you were much younger; which may’ve not been that long for him since dragons live twice as long as humans; and that combined with the fact you were in the care of a complete stranger meant you were a bit tense all things considered. But your tenseness slowly built into excitement as the path he was following led to a familiar place. You were getting giddy; even if Torrin neglected to bring you outside for a while, you knew this place well because it got you out of sitting in a pen all day with the other annoying humans. It allowed you to have your own adventures away from everyone else; Vulcan must’ve noticed your restlessness because he chuckled and said “Well, someone’s excited.”
“It’s like you said.” you responded. “Just needed some fresh air.”
Anything really was better than being in that cage all day with the only company being a dragon as the only person who liked you. As he followed the sidewalk he approached the park; boring to anyone else but a field trip for you! You bounced your legs in glee as you saw a bunch of younger and older dragons enjoying the sunshine; they were massive of course, but none really matching the height and size of your owner. You saw a pair of middle aged dragons playing Frisbee together, a yellow dragon in his twenties playing guitar and singing with his human resting human on his snout, and an elderly dragon playing chess with a young human male on one of the public park checkerboard tables, among other things. But you were much more focused on the playground; which was thankfully completely empty for once; and the sight of the forests that compared to your height, were infinite labyrinths of nature and discovery. You missed the energy of the park goers, even if you preferred to stay far away from them. But really you just missed the serenity of it all, just being an animal in his habitat and forgetting your place in the world as pets for ungodly serpents on legs and just enjoying your freedom. Your eagerness was cut short as your owner took the fork in the path that steered cleared from the park. “Hey! Where are we going? The park is right there!” you pleaded to the dragon as you hammered on his cream coloured neck. “The park is dangerous for you, squirt. You’re a lot smaller for a human your age, don’t you think?“ He said. But he was right, you were much smaller than the average 18 year old, but you didn’t want to end your trip to the park this early. “I got you to protect me, don’t I?” you said. “Yeah, and if you get lost in the grass and I accidently step or sit on you? What after?”
“Then don’t do either of those and we’re golden.” You retorted.
“If it were that easy then I wouldn’t care, but it’s not, and Torin asked me to take care of you, so I’m not.” You both drifted farther and farther away from the park, now you were getting agitated. “Just this one time and I won’t ask you again! Please do it for me!” you said. “No is no, Torrin would never forgive me if you got hurt.” The park was now completely out of sight, you got so pissed off by this dragon’s stubbornness and the fact that he insists on treating you like a child that you couldn’t help but shout “At least Torrin has bigger balls than you! He wouldn’t be such a little pushover!” Vulcan’s naturally angry wrinkles looked even more wrinkled now; the lizard’s jaw was clenched and he puffed out smoke from his nostrils. “Look you shitty brat, I was acting nice since you’re still a kid, but it looks like that ain’t gonna fly. You’re NEVER going to that park or ANY park as long as you’re with me!” he roared. Your place in this world couldn’t have been made clearer. You egged this dragon on despite him being a walking talking building, and now you pissed him off. It caught you completely off-guard since he was seemingly patient with you until now; you finally got a glimpse of those steak knife fangs and crimson red gums as they aligned in front of the abyss that was his throat. This was an animal, you finally realized, and he had full control over your life. His outburst brought back some long repressed memories you had of his kind; you weren’t just intimidated now, you were genuinely afraid. You saw the familiar clawed hand approach you from behind, “You’re going in my pocket now, kid. It’s time you learn some respect.” Those words rang in your head, those words were just as painful and vivid now as they were before. You couldn’t differentiate them now, all you saw was the same giant angry lizard that was going to punish you, hurt you, and suffocate you in his hand until you begged forgiveness. You were yet another small rodent registering the situation at your most primitive; in retrospect, your owner probably should’ve realized the power he held over your and just how terrifying he could be. Your eyes were so wide they were about to pop out of your skull, you shook your head in plight and crawled backwards, you wanted so desperately to be out of this situation that that you failed to notice the drop below you. You yelped a pathetic squeal, before you knew it, you were tumbling down the dragon as you made your descent to the cement below. Your owner gasped and tried his best to catch you, just barely missing and stopping your momentum as you impacted his hand and were flipped backwards and landed onto his scaly barefoot. You were disoriented and had the wind knocked out of you, you rested on his clawed barefoot; as dragons never wore shoes because they liked the feeling of soil between their toes. As far as you know you’d just been threatened and attacked by a dragon, and needed to get out of here. You snapped out your dizzy state and caught your breath, you slid off his foot and began a dash into the grass. “Wait, why’re running? Jason, get back here! It ain’t safe!” your captor shouted as he threw his body to the grass trying to catch you, like a cat chasing his prey. You were scared shitless of how agile this muscle bound serpent was, you pushed your legs so far ahead that you felt like you were going to rip your leg muscles apart. “Shit, shit, shit! Not good, not good! Jason?!” your owner huffed as he desperately spanned his arms out and looked for you in the grass, his heart about to come out of his chest, terrified at the thought of you being squished or taken. Now in the cover of a field of green, you could see the backside of the dragon perched over and searching for you in the other side of the grass. You snuck as far away as you could. After a while, you couldn’t see him anymore. You found yourself back in the park, from a perspective that made you realize how big everything was. No doubt your captor would come looking for you, so you decided to take your chances finding a place to hide, hoping you wouldn’t end up on the bottom of an unsuspecting dragon’s foot. You headed for…
