Maddie bit her lip, trying to think what to say. Now might be a good time to try to fish some info from her mother about herself, especially since everyone else seemed to have more knowledge of Maddie than she did.
"When is my birthday?" Maddie asked timidly.
Her mother laughed a bit, "You don't remember. We just had it last week. All your friends from school came over and we had a nice big party. After all, you only turn 10 once."
Maddie felt lightheaded, and had to close her eyes for a moment. 10? She was 10? Then how come she still had the body of an 18 year old? Although her birthday must be the same, since she remembered celebrating it last week by spending the whole day playing video games. This was getting way to confusing.
"How old is Rose and George?" Maddie asked hesitantly.
"I know it's hard to keep track of everyone's ages since you're so young, but what brought this on?" Her mother asked, glancing back at Maddie.
"Oh, uh, just curious."
"Well Rose is 15, her birthday is in June. George is 22 and his birthday is in May. And yours is this month, witch is October."
Maddie frowned slightly. All the birthday's were the same, and her siblings ages hadn't changed. So that meant that the only thing that had changed was how old she was. So if everyone thought that she was 10, that would explain how everyone had been acting towards her. Though maybe it was just her family that didn't realize she still had the body of a teenage boy.
"Well, we're here." her mother said, stopping in front a building that was definitely not the high school.
Of course that would be the case if everyone thought she was 10.
Maddie looked at the elementary school, watching all the kids running around and playing. She grabbed her bag and got out of the van, thanking her mother for the ride before shutting the door and walking towards the school. No one seemed to pay any attention to her as she made her way inside, which seemed to further confirm that everyone thought she was 10.
She stopped in the entry way, looking at the rows of doors that lined the hallways. She realized that she didn't know where her class was, and it seemed like everyone was in a hurry to get to their rooms which meant it must be starting soon. She looked around for anything that could help her.
The crowd of students was thinning, watched over by a stern looking lady with a large frown on her face. Dreading what was to come, Maddie approached her, "Excuse me."
"What? What do you want?" the lady responded in a voice like gravel.
"I'm trying to find my room." Maddie said staring at the ground.
"Maddie isn't it, your room is 102. Now more along so you aren't late." She said, shooing Maddie towards one of the hallways.
The rest of the day passed fairly uneventfully, with Maddie trying to keep to herself as much as possible until she could learn more about herself and her 'friends'. Mrs. Treant ended up being a rather plump young lady, who was very nice with red horned glasses. She gushed over Maddie's art, exclaiming how good it was for such a young girl. She was embarrassed to be getting such praise, but part of her was really liking it.
By the time school was over, it had mostly stopped raining, and many kids were playing in front of the school while they waited for their rides to come, while others loaded onto the bus that ferried the kids who lived further away. There was no sign of Maddie's parent's van, though it was possible that she wasn't coming since it had stopped raining. Now was the moment to decide what to do. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
