Chapter #18

Another dead end

„I am sorry“, she said and looked at the table. “I don’t have your tablet… I just noticed mine missing when I got out of P.E. and feared that someone stole it… Thank you for brining it back and sorry that I couldn’t give you yours… I can lend you mine if you want…”

Ethan was surprised by her reaction. “Is she really this socially awkward that she apologizes for not happen to find my tablet? She is lying, right? She must be”, he thought and looked at her face and sighed. “She doesn’t look like she’s lying. Shit.”

Ethan looked down and shook his head. “No, it’s fine. Thank you for your offer.” He looked at Lilly who had a similar expression than his on his face, then the two left, leaving Keiko alone and confused.

“His tablet must be really precious to both of them…”, thought Keiko as she looked after the two. “They look like someone just died…”

“Shit”, yelled Ethan and punched the wall. The two went back to their place by the dumpster, neither of the two being slightly interested in school. “Shit, shit, shit!”, he continued punching the wall with every word.

Lilly slumped down beside him. “Punching the wall won’t help.”

“Yeah, but it helps me to not break apart”, he said but stopped his attack on the wall. For now. “I really want her to have lied to us. I really do…”

“But she did not. Or she is a really, really good actress”, replied Lilly. “Besides… Where should she have hidden the swapplet? We have to face the facts: The swapplet is lost and we are forever doomed to be like this.”

Her friend-turned-brother got limp and slumped down on the ground. “You’re right…”, he sighed. “Well, the swapping was fun as long as it lasted, eh? And we could have ended up even worse.”

Lilly nodded and looked down at her feet. She tried to suppress her tears, but to no avail. The thought that she would never see her mother and little sister again. Sure, she did not always get along with them, especially her mother in the recent years, but she still loved both of them!

Ethan put his arm around his friends’ shoulder and she pressed her face against his chest, crying. Normally he would have been the happiest boy in the world. The girl he loved was pressing her own body against his, but the circumstances made it hard for him to even think happy thoughts. How could he? His dream girl was now his sister and was basically a she-male, although nobody would notice that. He on the other hand was a girl through and through. He would start to have periods and was probably able to give birth, something he would rather not experience. “Although I doubt that I’ll find a girl who could get me pregnant, baring a certain incestuous possibility”, he thought with a touch of gallows humour.

The two stayed like this until the final school bell rang, both too absorbed in their own pity. It was Ethan who finally broke the silence. “We should better get home… And… And probably try to accept this… This is our life now…”, he said, not quite believing that this would be as easy as he claims it to be.

In silence the two went back to Ethan’s house, which was now also Lilly’s house. Normally they would talk during the walk but today they were clearly not in the mood. Besides coming to terms with their current situation, they only looked around the pathway, hoping that there may have been a bump and the device fell out of Ethan’s bag, now laying around. If this was true, they found no evidence and even more unfortunately, no device. They arrived crestfallen their destination.

“Here we are…”, sighed Lilly. “Our home…”

It was still hard for her to think of it like that, but she knew it was true. She had to accept it, as hard as it was going to be. Her legs began to shake, she knew, when she crossed the threshold that there was no going back. She would have to admit that the two lost the swapplet and that there was no way to turn them back to normal. Of course, she knew that it was already the case but there was this small, frail voice in her head that told her that they could still find it, the just have to look harder.

Ethan noticed how Lilly felt and took her hand, not even really thinking about what he was doing. “It’s okay”, he whispered. “I’m here for you.”

Lilly nodded and the two went to the front door.
