Some other options for shrinking scenarios during Harry's 2nd year.

1. Instead of sealing the entrance to Platform 9 3/4, Dobby uses elf magic to shrink Harry to an inch tall, thinking there is no way Harry will be able to board the train. Dobby vanishes, but then Ginny comes looking for Harry.

2. A curse causes Harry to shrink during quidditch practice, and somehow sticks him to his broom. Nobody saw quite what happened, only his empty-seeming broom suddenly falls from the sky. With Harry gone, Gryffindor needs a new seeker, and Ginny tries out for the position, using Harry's broom.
