You give a wave and a “See you guys later” as you break into a sprint, making a beeline for the towering slides that your mother reminded you that you were not allowed to go on. A few steps in, your run is broken as a firm voice pierces the air.
“Now just hold on there young man!”
You feel a large hand grasp your shoulder and yank you back. You find yourself face to face with your annoyed mom as she dangles you above the ground.
“Jack Harper!” she scolds as you struggle to break free from her grip. “You know better than to run off by yourself in a place like this. How many times have you had an accident here? You know the rules: you can ride the slides if me or Aunt Viv or Barbara is with you.”
“Aw, Mom,” you protest. “Do I have to go with one of you? Can’t I at least go with Andrew? He can look after me.”
“I’m sorry, dear,” your mom says. “Andrew just isn’t old enough to watch after you properly. I just don’t trust another kid to make sure nothing happens to you. I would feel a lot better if your sister and you were with an adult.”
You look around to see if at least she would come with you and Andrew on the slides, but he had already taken off. Kat and Kris had left too, but your mom didn’t trust them either. And with Kat constantly pranking you and setting you up for catastrophe, she was right. But you weren’t exactly thrilled to spend your day with your little sister and your mom and her friends either. Zelina would surely whine and cry until she got her way, usually at your expense. And all of these women present challenges of their own for you. Barbara is inattentive at best, and at worst has a twisted side. You’ve never been able to prove it, but you’ve always suspected that she looks to squish you for her own amusement. Your Aunt Vivian, while sweet, is dumb as a bag of rocks. On top of that, she likes to drink, further impacting her already questionable judgement. And your mom is in full overprotective mode; if she even lets you on anything bigger than the kiddie slides, she will likely insist on carrying you in her arms (which doesn’t exactly prevent you from being squished most times). While she is smarter than her sister, she does have her ditzy moments. She is good at protecting you from outside forces, but tends to let her guard down when it comes to herself. In spite of - and sometimes because of - her fiercely protective nature, she has squashed you as much as anyone else. You sigh as you are confined to a day with one of these ladies.
