Michelle and Christian had been friends for a long time. But only friends. Each had on occasion entertained the thought of dating the other, but the timing had never been right. So they were happy at just being friends, and Michelle was quite happy with being Matt's girlfriend.
Michelle knew her friend Christian would forget all else when he was working on one of his inventions. She knew he was in the middle of a creative phase right now, and would forget things like eating. She also knew Christian's mother would be late at work, and his sisters would be out of the house, so no one would be there to remind him to take his meals.
