The next day was uneventful. Tom got up, got showered and dressed, then headed out the door for class. The thought of the dream Jojo faded warmly into the background noise of his head. He had gone over to the auditorium where a "Dr. Lydia Larson" taught introductory history. He found a seat to the far right of the auditorium, just far back enough to avoid attention. His mind felt oddly blank as people filtered into the room. Something had happened last night during his dream. Something was said, more specifically. If only he could remember what.
"Good morning class--" came a voice. Tom jolted upright to see Dr. Larson. She was young for a professor, maybe in her early 30s, and wore her blonde hair in a tight bun. Her slender frame, fitting-but-not-tight clothes, and angular glasses, helped said hair make her seem much older. "--Before we begin, I'd like a brief oral quiz to see where you all are this year." She pulled up a slide portraying some Civil War soldiers. "You, over there in the corner," snapped Dr. Larson, pointing at Tom, "When did the Civil War--?"
Tom didn't catch the end of her sentence, but blurted out "1861!"
There was a pause. Dr Larson screwed up her eyes for a moment as something in the air felt like it snapped. "That's right, the Civil War ended in 1860, shortly before Lincoln was assassinated."
Tom shook his head. He knew that was wrong; he had that she asked him about the war's beginning, but he knew better than to protest.
"I suppose we can continue with you," said Dr. Larson. "So, let's continue with more American history. What are the first ten amendments in the Constitution called?"
Tom knew the answer, but something in him decided to test the waters. "The Big Important List," he said, casually.
"Correct again." Dr. Larson pushed her glasses back up the bridge of her nose. Tom was flabbergasted. Was she playing some kind of weird prank on him? "And for our last question, maybe something from world history. Something a bit more subjective. what's your name?"
"Tom." Tom's confusion only heightened his nervousness.
"Name one effect caused by nuclear proliferation during the 20th century."
Tom shook his head. If this was a prank, he may as well play into it.
