Despite her reservations about the excitement of this kind of work, Allyson's day flew by. The customers kept filtering in to the store, apparently enticed by some free samples EC had sent out to a portion of Spring Falls. Allyson wouldn't have thought people would be this desperate for candy, of all things, but apparently they were now hooked. That suited Allyson just fine; the better business was, the more chance she had of getting paid.
By the end of the day, Allyson's cheeks were aching from how much she had smiled at people all day. Sarah had kept an eye on all the new employees, giving them encouraging pep talks and thumbs ups throughout their first shifts. Allyson appreciated the enthusiasm she had for their work, but her constant cheeriness was exhausting at times. Finally, the doors closed for the day, despite there being a few more people waiting outside, who Tara had to politely turn away. Allyson breathed a sigh of relief, eager to have a rest. Her feet were killing her. She just wanted to go home and collapse on the sofa.
"Well done girls, a very profitable day, all owing to your hard work!" Sarah congratulated them, beaming with pride. "Tomorrow, we'll switch things around, so that Allyson can restock, Tara can be on the till and Carla can meet and greet."
"Swell," Carla said sarcastically, producing her phone from her pocket again.
Sarah ignored the comment. "Now then, I'll close up here, you girls get yourselves home. Hopefully, tomorrow won't be quite so tiring for us. Oh, and don't forgot your free candy!"
Allyson, Tara and Carla all left the store front and walked back through the office, where they saw three huge bags of candy laid out in a row, each one practically half the size of each girl.
"Wow, she wasn't kidding about the free samples," Tara said, smiling. "I thought it would just be a pack or a candy bar or something. These are huge!"
Carla grabbed her bag and headed out. "Whatever, we earned it. See you tomorrow guys."
"Her work ethic isn't that great," Tara observed. "This is easy work for the money they pay us."
"I know, right?" Allyson said. "I guess if business keeps up the way it was today, they can afford it though."
Tara and Allyson grabbed their free samples, said goodnight, and headed home. Allyson found herself being weighed down by the bag as she bundled it into her car. She wasn't even a big fan of candy, but it seemed rude to just leave it behind. When she finally got home, kicked off her shoes and took off her blazer, immediately staggering to the couch and collapsing with a content sigh.
Sandy, still dressed in her own work outfit; a much more casual looking black t-shirt and jeans, was sitting in the chair opposite, watching some sort of true crime documentary. "Hey, how was your first day?" She asked.
"Tiring," Allyson said, laying her head back. "You wouldn't believe how busy it was."
"People like candy that much, huh?" Sandy laughed.
"Apparently so," Allyson replied. "Got some free samples if you want some."
Sandy looked over to the huge bag that had been dumped by the door...
