She takes a step closer to see if her eyes trick her. On the contrary; come closer, the man is even stranger than before. He's lean, his skin mostly lost between all his wrinkles; there really is a live birdnest in his hair, and his beard is deep green with moss; however, at closer inspection, Lilly sees that his skin too is more green than a person's should be, and that he is dressed in a loose shirt that seems to be also home to various rodents and small reptiles. Behind him is a clearing that Lilly can't really see from the huge flowers covering it, but what she sees she has a hard time believing. Inside, there's pavilions and tents and monger's stands in all colours of the rainbow, occupied by all sorts of folk straight from fairytales; people the size of her hand, people with pointy ears and eyes like a cat's, people with a horse's torso or a goat's legs. Some people almost look normal, there is no rabbit's ears or golden eyes, but still, she can tell that they're not, that they're not like her. She doesn't understand how she didn't hear them before; there is laughter, and singing, and music so pure it feels like a fresh bath; there's vendors advertising their impossible products, and showmen gathering the crowds for exciting attractions.
She almost wanders in, just intoxicated with all the colour and music and magic, when the man with the green beard stops her.
"Welcome to the Forest Fair," he says. "Have you come to barter or to entertain?"
"T- to what?"
"Have you come to barter and buy miracles and wonders? Or are you perhaps a dancer, a singer, a poet or a talespinner?"
"Uhm... can't I just go in? Just to take a look."
"Of course. But if you're a customer, you must pay an entry fee. If you're an entertainer, just state your craft and you shall be inside."
The reality of what he's saying is slowly reaching her mind. She was dying to get inside, just to breathe the air, mingle with the wondrous folk, maybe buy some delicacies. Did he say an entry fee? Shit. I didn't bring my wallet, she realises. Could she pass as an entertainer? She's not really good at singing or dancing; she's a really good DJ, but this didn't seem like the kind of fair that would have one. She bit her lip. What should she choose?
