Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger.
If you ask a warlock what the difference is between warlocks and wizards, they will tell you it's a matter of offense versus defense.
Mind you, a warlock will always have at least one decent defense spell in his repertoire. But a warlock's philosophy is that their defensive spell only has to last long enough for their offensive spells to overwhelm their opponent's defenses.
If you ask a wizard what the difference is between wizards and warlocks, they will tell you it's a matter of subtlety and bluntness.
Wizards do know a great number of defensive spells, but they would call them protective spells, not defensive ones. A subtle difference, but wizards are all about subtlety.
A wizard doesn't just use shield and wall and sphere spells. They learn the migratory patterns of herd animals in order to avoid certain predators. They learn secret languages in order to find shelter in hidden passages. In short, a wizard dedicates themselves to learning a wide array of knowledge, instinctively knowing what seemingly esoteric wisdom that may save their lives one day.
A wizard will also occasionally know just the right spell to destroy an opponent, understanding that destruction is sometimes the best defense.
Another difference between wizards and warlocks is that wizards have companions, while warlocks have minions. Even warlocks who consider themselves "good" will, at least subconsciously, consider the fate of anyone around them as subservient to their own desires and ambitions.
So it is understandable that most adventuring parties prefer to have a wizard in their mix rather than a warlock. And though you may be young and inexperienced, you plan to prove to the adventuring party you are joining that their faith in wizards in general and you specifically is not misplaced.
(Before we continue, how many other people, not including yourself, will be in your first adventuring party?)
