Chapter #6

Rehabilitation Therapy

    by: Oceanicanic Author IconMail Icon
"I have some excellent news, Mr. Lamprouge. The procedure was a marvelous success!" said the balding Britannian man in a lab coat.

It was a bit of a longshot, but when his contacts had stumbled upon the fact that certain Britannian soldiers were coming back to the front lines despite their files recording crippling injuries he had to investigate further.

Anything for Nunnally.

And it had paid off handsomely. The specifics were beyond him, his natural intelligence simply not having all of the context for the medical jargon thrown around, but as far as he could confirm it was a genuine medical breakthrough. With a few injections of a new compound wheelchair bound Britannian soldiers were walking again. There were minimal side effects, some drugs to take afterwards, and it wasn't available to the public yet, but it worked reliably.

With a liberal application of Geass these services were at his disposal and Nunnally was slated for the procedure as soon as he could manage it.

Lelouch ran his fingers through Nunnally's hair as she slumbered in the hospital bed. While he was not able to give back her sight through this way, by this time tomorrow his beloved sister would begin her journey to walking once again.

---

"I genuinely don't understand why its not working." muttered the doctor Lelouch had long put under Geass. It may have been rash but he had no regrets if he could squeeze out a single extra chance to help his sister.

At first they had been very optimistic. Nunnally could feel her legs almost immediately after the surgery, and that alone was cause for joy. Reflex tests like hammers on the knee produced involuntary movement for the first time in a decade. The problem came when it was time to try to get her to move consciously. They simply couldn't.

The doctor was now pouring over an array of scan results covering every inch of her newly repaired nervous system trying to find the cause. The procedure should have regrown and reinforced neural pathways leading to the injured area. Making use of the healed limbs quickly was important, as the new neurons were highly malleable to learning new things but only for so long.

"Huh, that's odd." A chill went down Lelouch's spine at the doctor's casual remark. That was never something you wanted to hear a doctor say. "We didn't operate on her eyes, did we?"

"No, you did not." Lelouch ground out. "Why?"

"Because according to this chart, not only is nothing wrong with her legs anymore, nothing was ever wrong with her eyes either!"

---

Psychosomatic, was the diagnosis the doctor laid out to both of the siblings. At the moment Nunnally had the ability to not only walk but also see physically speaking, but mental blocks were preventing her from doing either.

"So, this is my fault." murmured a despondent Nunnally. While she didn't blame herself for the recent surgery, the idea that she could have been seeing all along and just wasn't strong enough was wrecking havoc with her already fragile self esteem.

"No, no, don't think that for even a second." reassured Lelouch. The expression of pain she was wearing was almost too much to bear.

"But-" She tried to get a work in edgewise but was cut off again as she often was by her brother.

"No, lets not talk about that now. Let's talk about our options. Doctor?"

"Well, there are a few options. But in this particular case, with her circumstances, I would suggest hypnotherapy."

He wondered if it was going to be that easy. If they could just get her to see for only a moment then with his Geass...

"You mean, making her think she can see?"

"No, no, sadly nothing that simple." the doctor said. "As far as I can tell this trauma is very deep rooted into her identity, I doubt it would be that easy to cure."

Nunnally winced. It was true, she had defined herself by her limitations for most of her life by this point.

"However, how tightly it is wrapped around her identity means that it can be sidestepped. If she thinks that 'Nunnally can not see or walk' then we don't have to fight it. All we need to do is make her think she's no longer Miss Nunnally."
