Lincoln had agreed to watch Lola and her friends during her slumber party and now he was just scared of what Lola might do to him. However, he looked at Lisa's room and thought that he could take a quick look at her invention to make sure it wouldn't cause any harm. He certainly didn't want it to pose any threat to the safety of four innocent (seemingly innocent in Lola's case) little girls. Lincoln thought about it, but he also had to obey Lola or else she might do something even worse to him than what Lisa's invention could do.
"Lincoln! My guests have arrived. GET DOWN HERE NOW!" Lola viciously commanded from downstairs. Lincoln was startled by her shout and realized that being spared from Lola's wrath is more important right now.
"Coming Lola!" Lincoln answered. He then obeyed her and went downstairs to meet Lola's friends. Hopefully, they could be much nicer than her. As Lincoln came down to the living room, Lola had just opened the front door to let her friends in.
"Ahh, welcome my fellow princesses!" Lola cheerfully greeted as the first two of her friends had arrived. "Cricket, Roxanne! So glad you could make it!" It was true, Lola's two friends from her pageant studio, Roxanne and Cricket Van Doren, had arrived at her door with backpacks carrying possibly their sleeping bags, pajamas, and anything else a 6-year-old girl would bring to a sleepover.
"Hi Lola!" The two young pageant princesses greeted back before coming inside and giving Lola a hug.
"I'm so happy you two are here." Lola said.
"We wouldn't miss this night for the world." Cricket replied. "I brought my special makeup kit so that we can make ourselves look even more gorgeous."
"And I brought my own make your dollhouse kit!" Roxanne added, much to Cricket and Lola's shared confusion. "You know, so we can design our very own dollhouse. I bet we can even sell it." Roxanne explained while nudging Lola.
"Oh, that sounds great!" Lola said. "Come on in." The girls entered into her house.
"Wait a minute, Lola. Didn't you say there was one more person coming?" Cricket asked.
"Yep. And she should be here pretty soon." Lola answered, and about two minutes later, their final guest had arrived. "Ahh, there she is now." Lola looked outside to see a car pull up in front of her house and another girl wearing a gray dress and black hair tied into pigtails had stepped out of it and slowly walked to her front door.
Cricket and Roxanne noticed the new girl and saw that she had a pretty nervous look on her face as she walked pretty slowly to her house. To them, however, she didn't really look like the kind of girl who would be into beauty pageants or anything that they liked to do for fun.
"Meli! So good to see you!" Lola greeted with a friendly hug. The girl was taken a bit off guard but then smiled as she returned the hug. "Glad you could make it. Now come on in and meet my friends." She walked Meli in and closed the front door, now happy to see that all of her friends were now together for her party.
Lola brought the shy girl to her other friends with her arm still around her shoulder. "Girls. Meet my new friend from school, Meli Ramos. Meli, meet my pageant friends, Cricket and Roxanne." Lola introduced.
"Hi." The little girl in gray quietly said while shyly waving to the two of them. They could barely hear what she said but still returned the greeting, albeit, a bit awkwardly.
"Uhh, she's a little shy. Don't worry. I'm sure you'll all grow to love each other." Lola said trying to break the tension between them. "Now girls, why don't we all head up to my room and get this slumber party started, shall we?"
They were about to head upstairs until Cricket noticed a boy standing at the bottom of the stairs. "Lola, isn't that your brother there?" Cricket asked.
"Hey girls." Lincoln nervously greeted.
Lola shot Lincoln an angry glare telling him to stop making things awkward and Lincoln complied. She cleared her throat and answered her friend's question. "Y-yes Cricket. You remember my 'real' brother, Lincoln. He'll be here to watch us and cater to our every whim. Isn't that right?" Lola gave Lincoln a cold look telling him to say yes to what she said.
"Umm, yes." He nervously chuckled. "My mom told me to take care of you girls, so if you ever need anything I'd be happy to get it for you." Lincoln said. Cricket seemed happy about it and so did Roxanne, but Meli saw how scared Lincoln looked when Lola said that to him and thought that there was more to it than that.
"Oh. Well how thoughtful. That's very nice of you, Lincoln." Cricket said as she walked up to the boy. "I'm sure you remember me from that incident with your friend, Clyde, pretending to be Lola's brother." Lincoln chuckled at that and nodded, much to Cricket's amusement. Then to Lincoln's surprise, she gave him a kiss on both of his cheeks. "That's how we greet each other where I'm from." She added and then walked up the stairs past Lincoln.
As everyone else, went upstairs, Lincoln noticed that Meli seemed to be a little bit nervous and hung her head down. She was the last one going upstairs, so Lincoln, with his big brother instincts kicking in, gently placed his hand on her shoulder. Usually, being so timid, Meli would be pretty startled when someone touches her out of nowhere, but Lincoln seemed so gentle and she wasn't frightened at all.
"Hey there, Meli. Are you okay?" Lincoln asked in a caring tone, which helped Meli to look at him without feeling intimidated by how much taller he was than her.
Meli blushed a bit, but still tried to answer. "Well, I guess I'm just a little bit n-nervous. This is m-my first slumber party and I'm scared that L-Lola's friends won't like me." Meli slowly answered with a stutter. But, Lincoln got down on one knee to be eye-level with the young, shut-in.
He gave a warm, gentle smile that seemed to help Meli feel less scared of him. "Hey, it's alright. I get it, Meli. You're a little shy. That's normal." Lincoln said in a comforting tone that made some of Meli's blush go away.
"Really?" She asked. "Yeah. It's okay to feel shy. But, nobody's going to judge you for it. And who knows, if you give Cricket and Roxanne a chance, maybe, they'll grow to really like you. And they'll be your friends too." Meli liked the sound of Lincoln's kind words and felt a little more comfortable now, comfortable enough, to actually speak normally now.
"Okay. Thank you Lincoln." Meli said and Lincoln was happy to see the bright smile on her face when her blush completely faded. "Would you go up the stairs with me?" She asked.
"Sure. If that helps you feel better." Lincoln agreed and gently took Meli's gray, sleeve-covered hand in his as they walked up to Lola's room together. She would've felt nervous holding an older boy's hand like this, but then she looked at Lincoln and saw something about him, something that she strangely found...very appealing. She looked away from him with a blush and just tried to stay calm until they reached her host's bedroom.
But as they got to the top, Lincoln looked to Lisa's room and thought he could check out what Lisa told him to look at before she left. "Meli." The young girl turned towards him as he called her name. "Why don't you just head on in, okay? I need to check on something in my sister Lisa's room."
Meli wasn't sure about Lincoln leaving her side now. Lincoln didn't like letting the shy girl go in alone either, but he didn't have Lola to worry about right now, so he figured it was safe for the moment.
