Doctor Chakwas held up a buffalo wing as if it were a precious laboratory specimen.
The crew had gathered in the mess hall to watch the big biotiball game. The Washington Hackers were just outside the cutoff for the playoffs, so tonight's game versus New Orleans was critical. In keeping with the theme, the mess hall had been decorated with a bit of memorabilia and a truly festive spread prepared.
Wings, nachos, brats, and buckets of beer. There were a few sad looking celery and carrot sticks off to the side, but only Liara seemed to be partaking in them.
"I had Cerberus arrange a delivery!" Shepard shouted over the sound of a Tupari commercial. "Turns out you can have a courier deliver pretty much anything if you're passing through civilized space."
Her explanation was cut short by the roar of the crowd. The Hackers had scored, giving them the lead for the first time tonight.
The doctor dipped her wing in ranch with careful precision. It tasted real enough, so either the Commander had arranged for real chicken, or an impressive substitute. Either way, she had picked it clean in next to no time.
These "special occasions" were becoming more and more frequent. Just a few days ago, Shepard had arranged for ice cream sundaes in honor of Gabby's birthday (complete with Dextro-friendly options), and before that, it had been taco night. She'd had multiple crewmembers in the sick bay after that with everything from not being able to handle their spice, to just plain overeating and needing something to settle their stomach.
Doctor Chakwas suspected she'd have at least a few late-night visitors tonight as well, with how much greasy food and beer was being consumed. There was a reason the ships she'd served on until now had kept to a much less "entertaining" menu. Aside from the exorbitant cost, (thanks, Illusive Man), it wasn't exactly great to tie up hospital beds with acute food coma patients.
Of course, the good Doctor herself was hardly immune. While the rest of the crew could rely on regular field missions to burn off the luxurious meals, Karin was more-or-less confined to the med bay and its surrounding areas. She couldn't stray too far, who knew when there might be an emergency that the automated care systems were inadequate to treat. Especially with so many aliens aboard with all their individual needs! It was a wonder she even got time to sleep!
Taking a slice of pizza from the middle of the table, she briefly paused to reconsider. Should she really be indulging herself like this?
