Chapter #6

Straight out of the comic books.

by: Scifiwizard Retired Author IconMail Icon
I was about to order something to drink when a commotion outside caused me to turn around. A short, skinny teenager was running down the middle of the street with a number of police officers giving chase. The boy was carrying what looked like some woman's purse which told me he likely mugged someone and was trying to get away.

"Someone needs to stop him." Standing up, I muttered.

I moved to walk out of the malt shop only Liv stopped me. "That's not a good idea." Serious, she warned.

Before I could ask what she meant, the boy suddenly transformed into a massively muscular six foot man and clocked a police officer who got within arms reach. The police officer was rendered unconscious with a single blow but the man continued to run as a bullet ripped his shirt flying passed.

"He calls himself Bruiser." Calmly, Geo explained. "He is a petty thief who can make himself very strong for a short time."

"The police are more than capable of handling punks like him." Lightly, Ted added. "No need for you to get involved."

To say that I was surprised would have been an understatement. "This place comes straight out of the comic books..."

Just then, Bruiser ran into the malt shop and made a bee line for Liv! It did not take a master detective to know he was intending to use her as a shield. Instinctively, I took a defensive position. The moment Bruiser got close enough, I took him down with a heavy lunge punch followed by a back hand strike. Bruiser fell like a pile of bricks, unmoving on the floor as the police charged in. They looked at me in surprise to which I shrugged.

"He was going after my new friend." Motioning to Liv, I explained. "I acted instinctively."

"Good work, kid." Nodding, the police officer said. "We will still need to get a statement from you."

I nodded then turned to Liv who, to my surprise was giving me a bemused look. Geo nodded as Ted gave a half smile while Steve grunted before giving a half smile of his own. Liv then touched my cheek before giving me a light peck on the forehead, making me blush.

"That's for defending me." Softly, she said.

"Don't get used to it, Casanova." Grinning, Ted said. "She's not the damsel in distress type."

The three boys laughed at the joke as Liv winked at me. "You just broke the ice." Calmly, she said. "It's a start."

"I'm beginning to see what you guys were warning me about." Softly, I said.

Liv nodded, her face turning serious but she did not speak as another voice joined the conversation.

"Well done, young man." Startling me, an feminine voice said. "Just don't let your skills get to your head."

I turned to find...
